While our recent print interview with Phillip Jung of DJ duo M.A.N.D.Y. -- playing tomorrow's Intro 2009 festival -- looked at their thoughts on music festivals, we also spoke with him about M.A.N.D.Y.'s music.
M.A.N.D.Y. has been synonymous with some of the most fun dance music coming out over the past few years. What drives you to create your sound?
Our own taste. We have been going to clubs and concerts for soooo long. At some point you just develop your own sound. You just do it without thinking if it’s cool or uncool or house or techno or whatever. You just have to believe in yourself, but this takes a lot of years of trying and experimenting, which we have been through!
You both have a long history together, meeting when you were rather young, before forming an artistic partnership. Do you feel that history feeds into how you work together? Do you find yourselves playing different roles?
Of course it affects us a lot. We’ve known each other for 22 years now. We’ve done a lot of funny and crazy stuff together and we still inspire each other, which is very important and essential. We still talk a lot about music. We spend a lot of time together and of course we have our problems too, but so far we have always found a solution.
What have been some of your biggest accomplishments music-wise to date?
To play at Love Parade last year in front of 500,000 people was pretty amazing and being voted best label and best track in 2005 by DJ Magazine was something special as well. It was also a big honor to mix the famous Fabric compilation.
Where do you see M.A.N.D.Y. going in the near future? Anything we should look out for?
Patrick and I are doing live shows now which is a big challenge. We are putting a lot of time and money into are our show. We are played at Coachella in April, which is one of the biggest festivals in the US. We are in the studio a lot at the moment, as well, to make new songs. We have been traveling a lot and have partied a bit too much over the last 3 years and now it’s time to focus on studio work again!
