Reader's Choice Awards 2008: The Best of Beijing Nightlife
Last month, you voted online, by cell phone and by paper ballot to tell us which restaurants in Beijing you consider to be the very best for our fourth annual Bar & Restaurant Awards. Thursday night we presented the winners with their awards at the awards ceremony and party, and a full cover story on the winners is coming soon. For those too curious to wait until then, here are the winners of the best in Beijing nightlife in all their shining glory.
Best to Find a Date
Suzie Wong’s
Whether you’re looking to fall in love with a fellow ex-pat professional or just looking for a “temporary friend”, Suzie Wong’s is an unparalleled matchmaker in affairs of the heart and libido. This modern twist on the classical opium den has a swank roof deck and some of the wildest parties in town. Perhaps that’s why they more than doubled the votes of the second place contender.
Runner Up: White Rabbit
Editor’s Pick: The Bookworm
Far from a Sanlitun meat market, the relaxed atmosphere at The Bookworm means everyone has their guard down. Too shy to introduce yourself to the hottie reading Hessler next to you? Upload an online personal on the wi-fi.
Best Beijing Band
Woodie Alan
A mix of expat and Chinese members, blues-rock heroes Woodie Alan have set the standard for the local music scene. Co-titular guitarist Alan says they would have chosen a more serious name if they had known they would make it so big, but we wouldn’t have them any other way.
Runner Up: Carsick Cars
Editor’s Pick: HedgeHog
The fox knows many things, but HedgeHog knows one big one: how to rock the stage with audacious noise pop. With pint-sized girl drummer Atom on the kit, they’re an act that must be seen live to be believed.
Most Extravagant
Lan
Over-the-top, yes, but one should never underestimate the power of a night of drinking. Lan Club isn't reasonably-priced, but then again, the drop-dead gorgeous generally aren't. From the sexy, exotic decor to the high-class drink list, Lan Club makes you think twice about heading back to the old dive bar across the road.
Runner Up: The Beach
Editor’s Pick: Loong Bar
Exquisite Oriental dragons on the walls, cool marble, and seductive lounge beats are quite enough to keep us happy, but Loong Bar also makes one of the best martinis in town.
Best Beer Selection
The Tree
There’s no doubt among Beijing’s drinkers whose beer selection is best. The Tree, with a beer menu longer than Belgium’s census, easily won twice as many votes as its nearest competitor. The Duvel and Delirium Nocturnum are especially popular, but the wide selection of St. Louis fruit beers, such as the luscious raspberry, is unparalleled.
Runner Up: Beer Mania
Editor’s Pick: The Saddle Cantina
A million different Belgian ales is wonderful, but on a sweltering summer’s day in Sanlitun, we’re going to turn to The Saddle Cantina’s ice taps, which will serve up Hoegaarden and Stella at sub-zero temperatures.
Best Live Music
Winner: Yugong Yishan
Last year, Beijing's original music-driven venue jumped ship from the mega-club environs of Gongti to its current understated locale just east of artistic ground zero, Nanluoguxiang. Since then, it’s remained true to the tried and tested formula of the best on the musical platter. "We just want to thank our old crowd and all of the musicians," insists Yugong Yishan's Dorothea Adam, "because you were the ones who rocked our house." Dedicated to the best of live music since its inception, Yugong Yishan continues to host both the best of Beijing and the world's most cutting-edge bands on its stage.
Runner-Up: D-22
Editor’s Pick: MAO Live House
Look past the dilapidated furniture, graffiti on the walls, cheap drinks and unassuming location near Gulou, and you will find Beijing's crispest sound system. It’s comfortable no-frills all-black auditorium puts the spotlight where it should be: on the city’s best rock acts.
Best Dance Club
Winner: White Rabbit
Nightlife newcomer, White Rabbit, defeated Beijing nightlife stalwart, Suzie Wong’s, by a solid 51 votes. How’d they do it? The brainchild of legendary Beijing DJ Yang Bing, BaiCai founding member Thomas Gaestadius, veteran promoter Fu Yan and former China DMC Champ Shorty S, White Rabbit blends stark, minimalist decor and a stellar line-up of both local residents and the brightest names on the global electronica circuit to create the perfect venue in which to dance the night away. "We set out to be a very dance-oriented club with music first," Gaestadius admits, "so it's fun and rewarding that people appreciate that."
Runner-Up: China Doll
Editor’s Pick: ReMix
What serious clubber hasn't dreamt of being trapped within a Bang and Olafsun speaker? Armed with a high-end Funktion One sound system, padded walls, elegant decor and an expansive dance floor, we spent our first night at ReMix hoping to hear all of our favorite DJs in the world there.
Club of the Year
Winner: Block 8
The bling-bling will never factor out of the equation for the Block 8 nightlife megaplex. "We're proud to be the best for the best of Beijing," maintains Director of Communications Kristen Lum. Block 8 is the defacto destination for anyone who seeks to impress, or be impressed. Whether one wishes the breezy elegance of Ibiza at the rooftop terrace of The Beach, or the extravagance of i-Ultra Lounge's pitch-perfect bottle service, or the intimacy of i-Space, Block 8 brings the expertise of restaurant mogul Alan Wong to cater to the highest order of Beijing clientele with class and sophistication.
Runner-Up: China Doll
Editor’s Pick:
GT Banana
After re-opening with a new, chic, space-age look, GT Banana brought the biggest DJs (think Tiesto) to Beijing this year. With more lasers per square inch and a bouncing dance floor, GT Banana is always amazing, no matter who's spinning.
Bar of the Year
Winner: Song
"Stylish as hell, but never stupid," is Song musical director Neebing’s mantra. And, that mantra is working for this venue, which blew away its competition after only five short months on the nightlife scene. Song is the type of bar that caters to the widest spectrum of Beijing's creative class. No other venue can boast a regular clientele so diverse: From the most underground hipster to the CBD business warrior, Song offers an avant-garde setting with cocktails to die for, solid service, great music and a glimpse at all the beautiful people of the city. Song allows us the rare opporunity to appear respectable while wasted. Amen.
Runner-Up: Wain Wain
Editor’s Pick:
Yugong Yishan
We love Yugong because it's the sort of watering hole where you can listen to the best in live music downstairs, then make a trip upstairs for a quiet cocktail of any kind.
