German techno producer and label head Stephan Bodzin had planned to land in Beijing on March 7 for a much-anticipated show at White Rabbit. Although the event has since been canceled, the coveted name in global techno still got enthusiastic with Rachel Simhon over his first trip to the Middle Kingdom before we went to press with our last issue. So, sit back and enjoy the interview:

• What made you want to come to Beijing?

It will be my first visit to China this March. I´ve heard that Beijing, with its rich traditional and cultural background, is still an exciting city with young people carrying new ideas. I´m really looking forward to experience it myself!

• What have you heard about Chinese techno? Have any of your peers in the German electronica circuit who have visited us in the last year shared any of their observations?

I know that the Chinese techno scene is an upcoming and very energetic underground scene. A DJ friend of mine played in Beijing and was amazed of the enthusiasm of the crowd. I think we will see the emergence of some Chinese artists in the near future.

• What do you feel your role is as a producer in the broader global techno scene?

My aspiration as a techno producer is to continue working on a high quality and fresh output that influences the global scene. As a label owner, my role is to encourage new talents. As a DJ I love to take people on a trip with the music I feel like playing.

• What do you hope to accomplish on this upcoming trip to Beijing?

I want to get a feeling for the Chinese scene, to have a memorable party, and to rock White Rabbit. I really like the idea that clubbing only began a decade ago. I´ve got high expectations, and I´m sure it´s going to be a crazy night!
