The Drop is a free-for-all musical collaboration--and this time around, DJ duo Oshi & Tnem bring Berlin-based dubstep DJ Doshy to Wangfujing's Earl Bar for a night of futuristic electronic sounds. This is the 13th Drop party ... and sounds scary good. We caught up with Doshy first-hand for some commentary.
Is there any new music you will be bringing to Beijing? I will pretty much play my own music for the first hour with all my fav tunes written over the last 3 years, including my latest tunes coming out later in spring. Maybe [if I have time] I will play some fresh new upfront grime, crunk, juke stuff I'm really into.
Where does the name Doshy come from? I get asked this question a lot....it's pretty much been my nickname since I was 16 or so ... my friends gave me that name and it's pretty much a combination of the 1st letters of my real name Dominik Schilling, so i just thought written like "Doshy" looks cooler.
What did you take from your last experience in Beijing? Dusty as hell. I have good memories back when it was actually my 1st gig on my Asia tour in 2010. Beijing is great, arty city. The venue back then was packed and I really enjoyed playing my music. Beijing is always a great place to be even though I never made it there in summer. Three times now all in winter, so I will take all my jackets and sweaters.
We also talked to the masters behind the popular Drop parties about why they've been missing from our city's nightlife scene for the last few months.
How long has it been since The Drop last hit Beijing? Why the hiatus? The last "Drop" we hosted in Beijing was in September with JCC. It was a really good and busy night and Miss Chaos (JCC) gratified us with a massive DJ set. After this party, we both got into different music projects, had to travel from here to there. At the end of the day, we couldn't find time to even think about The Drop during the last 3 months.
What are your plans for the future? We wish to bring more quality to our parties, [like] bigger international names. But booking big names for underground bass parties in China is, you can bet, risky. Anyway we are already trying to up our game and you will hear what's next about the Drop very soon. On a personal level, we are both still working on music production: most of them are demands (to make a living), but also personal stuff that hopefully will be released this year.
How do you think The Drop has affected or will affect Beijing's local music scene? We might not be the right people to ask how The Drop affects the capital's nightlife, as we lack the necessary distance to perceive this. But we really hope that The Drop brings a bit of freshness to Beijing's nightlife, music-wise, and our visual identity as well and of course the way we conceive a dance party. We just want to try to make people join more events of this type.
