Beijing hosts not one but two white parties this weekend.
Maybe it’s the wistful longing for a winter that saw little snow, or perhaps it’s the allure of dressing like an angel while sinning like a devil. Whatever it is, Beijing nightlife goes white this weekend, with not one but two chances to break that age-old rule of not wearing white this early in the season.
The annual Yen White this Saturday (March 28) at Star Live is usually the ultimate in colorless carousing, and there’s nothing to say this year won’t be just as deliciously devious as times before.
However, Yen has a new competitor: LAN Club’s Soirée Blanche. Dripping LAN in the decadence of St. Tropez (including imported music maestros DJ Kristof Tigran and live electronic keyboardist Davidof), this recurring event attempts to capture the feeling of wearing white linen pants on a distant Mediterranean isle. If only we could get a tan first.
Each event has its pros and cons. Free entry proves a definite upside to Soirée Blanche, especially in light of Yen’s Y80 advance purchase price. However, you couple that with the steep drink prices at LAN and everything about evens out. Of course, the crowds naturally differ relatively substantially, with Yen drawing a larger, younger and more – dare we say – wild group to Soirée Blanche’s refined yet still sassy draw.
Whichever event you choose, just feel lucky you can whip out your white polyester suit and finally buy that white wig you’ve been eyeing. Winter’s not quite over in Beijing, as the forecast predicts tiny snowflakes to dance all over the city this Saturday.
