Less than two years after the release of their self-titled debut, Carsick Cars return with their second offering You Can Listen, You Can Talk (Maybe Mars), tonight at Yugong Yishan.
The 12-track, 54-minute album, produced, mixed and mastered by Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.), is without a doubt the most highly-anticipated release of the year, and features some of CSC's best work to date, tracks like "One of Them" and "Unit 2" featuring Zhang Shouwang's knack for multi-layered guitars and alternate tunings.
While Carsick Cars wear their influences very openly (Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground), YCL, YCT demonstrates the band's growth over two whirlwind years that have seen the group travel around the world, exposing them and their sound to outside elements, definitely having some effect on the trio's songwriting chops.
Of particular note are the lyrical improvements over s/t, "Pan" and "Suicide" (from where the album receives its title) both offering memorable and catchy English phrases, a limiting factor that has addled so many Chinese bands in the past.
It's not clear whether the LP boasts a breakout anthem like s/t's "Zhongnanhai," but if there's any track bound to force the masses into a frenzy, "Suicide," its thumping, jumpy beat, driving bass and razor-sharp guitar assault is definitely a prime example of Carsick Cars at their best, and at 3:21 in length, it's certainly destined for U.S. college radio somewhere.
Sample tracks are now available on Carsick Car's official website, but for RMB 60, this show is a no-brainer for every Beijing rock addict.
