Bye, Super Bar Street: What is the fate of Beijing's restaurants and bars on Nuren Jie?

While never on my list of default dining destinations, the soon-to-be-destroyed Super Bar Street and I have gotten to know each other quite well over a year of lunches and occasional post-work drinks. Despite being marred by trash and the occasional street vendor taxidermist, this long alley also hosts the tasty Middle Eastern restaurant Biteapitta, Beijing’s only kosher spot, Dini’s, and authentic Malaysian spot Awana.

Tenants recently received notice of the imminent destruction, and have begun searching for new locations to continue their businesses—a move that will come as a relief to loyal diners. Still, I wondered about the implications of this move and spoke to a few restaurant managers to get some answers.

“Everyone’s been saying ‘Embassy, embassy, embassy,’ but at 5 o’clock they’re all going home—not staying for dinner,” says Biteapitta owner Avi Shabtai, who is a bit frustrated though positive about the situation. “This street at night is dark, it’s black, it’s dirty. No one is considering it as a proper place for dinner. We’re looking for a place where we can get more even business.”

Maria Duremdes, manager of Tim’s Texas Roadhouse, a favorite destination for hordes of hungry Tex-Mex fans, was surprisingly upbeat about the impending tear-down and move.

“Of course it’s still under negotiation,” she says, “but it’s likely we’ll move somewhere closer to Sanlitun. We’re excited about it.”

Awana’s restaurant manager John Zhang told me that they hope to find a new location even closer to the embassy.

While nothing seems to be set in stone, notices posted all over the street map out the future: an upscale mall area complete with new restaurants. Studying the poster outside Tim’s, Maria remarked “the design I see is really upscale. It’s going to really change the area.”
