The second branch of the popular Shunyi restaurant, Haru Teppanyaki offers high quality, delicate Japanese food with an international influence. Service is attentive without being overwhelming. The only drawbacks come from the location in the eerily empty Village North and the slight sterility of the cream colored dining rooms. We’re told that the latter will be remedied soon by the addition of artwork. The restaurant is similar to Hatsune with its extensive list of creative rolls, but the layout is very different—Haru is all private rooms.
The rolls (¥50-85) are tasty and bite sized, veering away from the oversized monsters at places like Shota Muni that can be awkward to eat. Diners get their own teppanyaki chef, and the attention, expertise and quality definitely exceed Sanlitun teppanyaki favorite Tairyo. The beef (we had the 150g filet mignon; ¥95) is all cooked to order and served with slices of fried garlic. The grilled seafood—dipped in a glorious cream sauce—shouldn’t be missed. We especially love the very large prawns. At ¥68 each, they’re a little expensive, but we wouldn’t eat at Haru without ordering them. The sake selection is decent, with 160 ml carafes starting at ¥40.
