Get Cozy During a Blustery Beijing Winter at these Fireplace-Featuring Finds

As the winter drags on and on, I’m starting to realize that I can’t hibernate the whole season—I need to make a quick dash to somewhere that reminds me that there must be some redeeming qualities to the biting cold. Growing up in the American tundra (Wisconsin, to be exact), one of the most sublime moments Jack Frost can offer is a steaming cup of something filling in front of the fireplace. I’ve never seen a wood burning fireplace in a Beijing home (though I’ve seen plenty of make-shift coal ones), so I have to get my fix in the couple local establishments that have intelligently played to the less enjoyable half of the local climate.

The Wangfujing Hilton, like many luxury hotels in the city, offers high tea (RMB68), but luckily for me, afternoon libations are served in the stately lobby lounge called The Library. The décor recalls an estate-like reading room, with high ceilings, swathed in a muted palette and a purposeful mix of modern and classic seating. The centerpiece is the large, almost imposing fireplace. An afternoon curled up with a cup of tea (or for me, champagne, as the Hilton also offers a tea set (RMB285) with a bit of the bubbly), with made-to-order scones and house made chocolates is as close to winter paradise as I can imagine.

Tongli Studios favorite, Le Petit Gourmand, continues to offer an alternative to The Bookworm crowd, with its novel-lined shelves, laid back atmosphere and respectable pricing. Where LPG wins out is with its thoughtful, French colonial-influenced menu and, of course, its fireplace. During the coldest of spells, the hot cocoa (RMB25) is one of my favorite choices, but throughout the month of Jan, LPG is featuring a winter BBQ menu for RMB 128 for a couple. It’s a great way to enjoy a rustic meal in a cozy, homey environment.

I can’t wait for the winter to be over, but there are some unique niceties that blustery weather can offer (snowboarding, hot pot, hot cocoa). How do you combat the cold or where do you run to when you need a chance to relish in the lesser season? Drop us a line at The Dish!
