Located inside the infrequently used Riverville Square in Shunyi, New York Style Pizza has its work cut out for it. Luckily, this little pizzeria seems up for the challenge. The chain, started by an Italian-American New Yorker, has already done extremely well for itself in Shanghai. The pizza dough is all made in-house, and the tomatoes and cheese are imported from Italy and the U.S. You can order pizza by the slice (¥15), and indecisive diners can also go half-half on their pie toppings.
We ordered half of the Brooklyn pizza, a tasty mixture of mozzarella, tomato sauce, pepperoni, jalapeno peppers and garlic, and half of the tomato basil pizza, which came topped with mozzarella, large, juicy slices of fresh tomato, fresh basil and garlic. The ingredients are all good quality, and the thin crust has a satisfying crispness. Pizza prices vary by size—a 16 inch is ¥108, an 18 inch is ¥118, and the giant 20 incher is ¥128. For sides, we opted for an order of onion rings (¥25). While we’re sad to say that the portion isn’t very big, the onion rings are battered and fried to a perfect crisp.
We’re not sure how many people will venture out to Riverville Square for the great lunch deals, New York Style Pizza is equipped with a fleet of bicycles and has free delivery within 3km, which should help the Shunyi suburbanites get through the winter. Students with valid IDs also get a 20 percent discount, making it a great spot for an after-school snack.
