Winter is finally over—the central heat has been turned off, the Uggs have been stored, and yours truly is itching for some al fresco dining. One of my favorite rites of spring is the blooming of the sakura. Last year, I joined the masses and headed to Yuyuantan Park to view the 2,000-odd cherry trees in all their glory. Predictably, my cherry blossom viewing party included drinks and a spread of delicacies. Before making the pilgrimage yourself, I suggest stocking up on some gourmet picnic fixings.
The multiple locations of Comptoirs de France make it an easy choice for tasty take out. ¥50-70 buys a sandwich, salad, soft drink and a bit of something sweet. My turkey sandwich, chef salad and muffin set (¥50) was filling and delicious. A visit to CdF isn’t complete without sampling the decadently aesthetic petit fours. You can load up on mini portions of tiramisu, assorted tarlets and éclairs for as little as ¥7 each. The Dongzhimenwai branch is also one-stop picnic shopping, as you can buy wine or any other extras at the Jenny Lou’s downstairs.
Pekotan has long been favored by the Central Park crowd for its pre-made sandwiches, set meals and baked goods. I can’t get enough of the walnut rustique roll (¥6) and bason epi (¥6), though my vegetarian friend swears by the tomato mozzarella baguette (¥20). The set meal (¥28 for three sides plus rice) is perfect for those wanting a more substantial take away option. I always nosh on the savory rolled chicken, broccoli salad and sautéed spinach with toasted pinenuts. The shop also carries a good selection of bottles from Palette Wines.
The offerings at A Food Affaire have quickly won me over with a daily rotation of Mediterranean-inspired deli dishes and wide selection of pre-packaged grab-and-go treats. Manager Simon Gauthier says, “My picks for a nice balmy picnic would include: hummus or duck pate with a baguette, Greek salad, carrot slaw … sandwiches including roast chicken, Praga ham and cheese and one of our pies.” Specific requests require pre-ordering. With advanced notice, Simon can arrange a specialty basket—including glassware/plate rental, utensils and a wine pairing—perfect for a stylish outdoor extravaganza.
The uncommonly long and snowy winter has me salivating for spring’s wondrous bounty. Remember, Beijing weather will make the jump from spring showers to sweat-inducing heat wave in a matter of weeks, so don’t miss the trifecta of beautiful weather, good friends and great food.
