Margaret River is an exceptionally beautiful premium wine-producing region in Australia. It’s recently caught the eye of Chinese investors, who have purchased majority stakes of a few local leading properties. Its Mediterranean climate ensures mild summers and not-too-harsh winters, which in turn provide an ideal environment for vine growing. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the two most popular wines to come from the region. Try Xanadu Chardonnay 2007 (¥321) from The Wine Republic and Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 (¥600) from ASC. Bordeaux-style Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc blends also shine here, and a good example is Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (¥419) from Pudao (6562-1800). All of these wines show subtleness and elegance, as compared with other wines produced from the same grape varieties in the many different wine regions in Australia, which are typically more “in your face” and flamboyant in style.
