You better watch out—not because Santa is coming to town but for the flying corks. As Christmas and New Year’s fast approach, there’s no beverage more appropriate than Champagne, the ultimate celebratory drink. Champagnes are divided between NV (non-vintage) and vintage, meaning the wine is made from grapes harvested in different years and in the same years, respectively. Usually, vintage is more concentrated and flavorful compared with the NV stuff. Try the Duval-Leroy Blanc de Chardonnay Millésimé 1999 from EMW (¥900, 6445-5787) for its loads of gorgeous brioche, pears and ripe apples character. Look for demi-sec (semi-sweet style) or doux (sweet style) on the label if you have a sweet tooth. Try Rene Geoffroy Cuvee Elixir Demi-Sec from Globus Wine (¥548, 5136-8345). For avid red wine lovers, Rosé Champagnes could provide the best of both worlds—Champagne with a dash of Pinot Noir. Try A. Robert Rose Brut from FortuneTree International (¥788, 021-3135-1731) for its vibrant raspberry and strawberry fruit aromas with a refreshing finish.
