Despite Spain’s recent economic troubles, it has still managed to regularly showcase top names in different fields on the international scene, from Nadal to jamon Iberico to Zara. Wines are no exception. Spain is historically known for its red wines, but whites have been enjoying a renaissance recently, and quality is as high as ever. I recently went to the first ever “Grand Tasting of the Top Wines from Spain” held in Shanghai, and here are a few whites I highly recommend. For starters, try the fruity and easygoing Marques de Riscal Verdejo DO Rueda 2010 (¥150) from ASC. Also try the aromatic, floral yet refreshing Martin Codax Albarino DO Rias Baxias 2009 (¥207) from Everwines. Lastly, go for Marques de Murrieta Capellania Bianco Reserva Rioja Doca 2005 (¥460) from Mercuris (8597-1566). This full-bodied and concentrated white from Rioja exhibits enticing honey, toast, apricot and vanilla character and is one for serious wine connoisseurs.
