Torrontes: An Up and Coming White Wine

China is predominantly a “red” country, but white wines are gradually gaining popularity. Only a few years ago, it was either Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc on the majority of restaurants’ wine list and the racks of wine shops. Eventually, other wines started to crop up, such as Riesling, Pinot Gris or Gewurztraminer, to name a few. In the near future, one name that consumers should look out for is Torrontés. It is a white grape grown almost exclusively in Argentina, unlike Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which are both grown in virtually every part of the world. The wine is in general aromatic, fresh and juicy. Here are a few recommendations. Try Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontés 2009 from EMW (¥192, 6445-5978); Bodega Norton Lo Tengo Torrontés 2009 from ASC (¥80, 6587-3808); and Callia Alta 2009 from Everwines (¥83, 8849-5555). These wines are fine for drinking on their own, or pairing with dim sum staples like shrimp dumplings or shaomai.
