Imagine sitting by yourself in a room, picking out the best wines from a lot of almost 400, one by one, for three consecutive days. That’s just what a group of wine experts from around the world, including the esteemed Steven Spurrier and Lynn Sherriff M.W., did at the Second Annual China Wine Challenge held at the Hilton Shanghai this July. The event pits China’s domestic wineries, importers and distributors against each other, and while many of the bottles are quite pricey, here are three reasonably priced medal winners from the competition to recommend. Try the Chiaro Prosecco NV (¥180) from Jebsen (8519-8616), a light and refreshing sparkler to go with your strawberries and cream. The Yalumba Y series Viognier 2010 (¥165) from Summergate, a full-bodied exotic white exhibiting tropical fruits and a floral character, is an ideal summer sip that could be enjoyed on its own. Lastly, pair your Wagyu burger with the juicy and velvety Chilean red El Bosque Maipo Valley Syrah 2008 (¥217) from EMW.
