Best Celeb Bloopers

From being the center of a drug bust to an accidental strip show, there’ve already been some doozies this year.

There’s an old Chinese saying: “Good deeds are never heard of outside the door, but bad deeds are proclaimed for 300 miles.” This may be especially true in the celebrity world. Whether or not they have contributed to charities to save the children or volunteered their time to clean of the environment, people are most interested in the drama their lives proved—wewant to see their most embarrassing, humiliating moments to make ourselves feel better. That’s the charity we want.

And thank the lord; there’s been a recent string of shameful celebrity acts in Asia. TV hosts (for a children’s program) Tuo Zongkang and Chu Chungheng, and TV celebs Da Bing and Hu Gua were all taken down in a massive Taiwan drug bust. First they were all in denial (“We’ve never touched anything illegal!”), but a little hair sampling gave them all away as active drug users. When the authorities announced the results, their faces crumpled in pain and tears flowed from their eyes: “But I’ve only tried twice and it was the bad influence from friends.” More than five entertainment big names were sent to rehab and each lost their television jobs, acting opportunities and more importantly, trust from their fans.

Nervous breakdowns, like stints in rehab, are nothing new in the entertainment industry. Take Britney Spears—her suddenly shaved head, hysterical screaming and public stripping isn’t exactly normal behavior. And Singaporean singer Mavis Hee is no less crazy. Last year she intruded into a guest room at a six-star hotel, shouting nonsense and telling the hotel guests to kowtow and call her God. She was then arrested and sent for psycho therapy.

We've never touched anything illegal!

However, the best celebrity blooper of the year so far goes to Hong Kong starlet Yumiko Cheng. A few months ago during a charity event, Cheng was preparing a flying trapeze act with another young singer, Chin Ka-lok. The originally titled “Beauty in the Air” turned out to be a “Striptease in the Air.” Chin was so nervous that he pulled off Cheng's pants, showing the audience her g-string. What's worse, the host Eric Tsang, instead of smoothing things over for the embarrassed Cheng, said, "Well at this moment, you kinda wish there was a slow-motion replay." It took months for Cheng to get up the nerve to be in public again after that.

And unfortunately, just last week, Cheng had another “accident.” During her performance at a singing contest in Toronto, she was too into her dancing to notice that her tube top had shimmed to the bottom. Tabloids report that she showed her breasts without realizing it for about 30 seconds. Finally the TV station sent a minion out to give her a large bouquet to cover herself with. Backstage, her old peeka- boo depression returned. I’m not very superstitious, but maybe little Yumiko should pay a visit to a temple to rid herself of this evil luck. Hopefully then she won’t turn up on my Worst Celebrity Disasters of 2007 list.
