Dreams Realized

As Cecilia Cheung celebrates the birth of her first child, she sees her dream become reality.

No one would disagree that on August 2, actress Cecilia Cheung was one of the happiest women in the world. With the company of her husband Nicholas Tse, her family and hundreds of reporters and fans, she gave birth to a baby boy in Hong Kong. Cheung finally, after a long struggle, found a way to prove her own happiness.

Tse, a son of two celebrities, emerged in the biz as a rock singer. But his rebellious persona was only the start of what the paparazzi found to be a wealth of print material: Tse soon showed his true colors as a lady killer, and broke the hearts of countless starlets. Seven years ago, Tse's romance with pop diva Faye Wang burst onto the front page of every HK tabloid. But the 21-year-old Tse soon found himself restless and started an affair with then starlet Cecilia Cheung. Cheung's tattoo on her ankle, “C$N—Cecilia and Nicolas,” was a proof of their illicit love.

The proud diva Wang immediately ended the relationship. Cheung was seen as the detestable other woman and, according to Wang's fans, got her just desserts when Tse went back to Wang after only two months. Cheung was devastated; she lost a scary amount of weight and started behaving erratically.

“I believe in love, but I'm always the one who gets hurt. Every time it's the man who leaves me, but they all said ‘I'm the one they love the most,'” Cheung once said. She went on to date Hong Kong singer Jordan Chan and Dutch banker Jeroen Nieuwkoop. But when Tse was brought on to star in the fantasy epic “The Promise,” Cheung reportedly fought tooth and nail to get a role in the film; she even lowered her price to nab the female lead.

Although “The Promise” didn't do well at home or abroad, the film at least achieved one thing—reuniting Tse and Cheung. Last year the couple secretly married in the Philippines and soon after began to make appearances in public as an official couple.

And unlike other career driven actresses, Cheung is happiest where she is right now: “When I was a child, some of my classmates wanted to become scientists or doctors. But my wish was different; I wanted to be a good mother. I think being a mother is the most fulfillment a woman can achieve.” While I still believe Tse is the wrong man for Cheung, her determination to get her man and realize her dream is impressive. “Becoming ordinary” is this star's unordinary dream.
