American Gary Heyne, master of the brews at Henry's Brewery, gives us the play-by-play (or pint-by-pint) of his day.

7:45 a.m. Home Wake up.

7:50 Grab a quick breakfast of Raisin Bran and yogurt.

8:00 Brush the pearly whites.

8:05 Throw on some clothes, including one of my arsenal of Hawaiian shirts. Grab some dirty laundry.

Lady Laundromat

8:10 Pick up cleaned clothes; drop off dirty clothes.

Home

8:15 Put clean articles in their proper place.

Police Station

8:20 Walk over to police station to get my residency slip.

8:30 Hand my passport and lease agreement to a very serious fellow behind the counter. To lighten things up I give him my name card and explain, in broken Chinese, that I make pijiu. It works! Beer—the universal language.

Tailor Shop

8:50 Pick up the pink silk Tang dynasty shirt I had made.

9:15 Try it on and it looks GREAT!

Taxi

9:25 Go back to my place to grab my workout bag.

9:35 Hop into awaiting taxi.

Physical Gym

9:55 Get suited up.

10:04 Start my hour and 10 minute treadmill routine; watch Chinese track and field.

10:45 My beautiful girlfriend, Carolina, comes down from her yoga class to say hi and chat.

11:09 Weights for a half hour.

11:40 Dry sauna and shower time.

12:10 p.m. Meet Carolina outside of her dressing room.

Starbucks

12:15 We pick up tuna sandwiches for lunch.

12:40 Proceed to the Manhattan for Free Beer. No, they don't have free beer; Free Beer is the name of my band.

Manhattan on Tongren Lu

12:55 Show up at rehearsal.

1:05 I am set up, tuned up and sound checked.

1:15 I throw out some new ideas.

2:00 We record some tracks.

Taxi

3:30 End of productive recording session. Head to Henry's Brewery and have a chuckle with the driver who speaks pretty decent English.

Henry's Brewery

3:45 Roll into Henry's to find that we just got our shipment of two-liter “To Go” beer growlers. Hooray! They look good and the seals are way better than expected.

4:00 Have my assistant Kevin line up a tank-cleaning regimen so we can filter a pale ale over to a new serving tank.

4:50 Tank is now cleaned, sanitized and full of CO2. Filtration begins.

5:30 Another beautiful filtration complete. I start infusing some added volumes of CO2 into the solution.

5:40 Go into the office to check and answer a myriad of e-mails.

6:00 Compose text for our webmaster Lei Chen.

6:15 Head down to chat with folks who have arrived for some after work libations.

Metro

7:30 Walk to Henan Station; head to Shanghai Indoor Stadium to scoop Carolina up for dinner.

8:10 Grab a cab to make like a banana and SPLIT!

Tapas Bar on Maoming Lu

8:20 Greet our friend Michael and sit down for a great dinner of chicken penne pasta with pesto.

9:15 Leave feeling full, so a body massage is out of the question, but a foot massage sounds good.

Massage Parlor

9:30 They are working on our necks and shoulders. Ahhhh.

10:30 Massage finishes. Drop Carolina at her place.

Henry's Brewery

10:45 I chat with the familiars first and then I go and introduce myself to new folks.

11:10 Rush around in attempt to satisfy the thirsty and impatient.

11:25 Mingle with the satisfied.

11:45 Still mingling with the satisfied—and the getting-to-be intoxicated.

12:00 p.m. Say bye to regulars.

12:10 Check my e-mail.

12:50 The last group walks out.

1:00 Head out for a nightcap.

I Love Shanghai

1:10 Order a stiff scotch on the rocks; talk with friends.

Taxi

1:45 Head home.

Home

1:55 Shed my clothes and hit the hay.

1:56 I'm out!
