In our regular Day in the Life column, found on the back page, we feature a typical day for one of Beijing or Shanghai's movers and shakers—which for most of us is all about work. Is work the all consuming force in an expat's life? Do we have any time for sex, much less love? This quandary reminded us of something Jack Nicholson once said: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." So in an effort to prove we're not all dull (and to get a peek behind closed doors), we convinced six expats to keep a sex diary for three days, detailing every sexual thought or loving caress as it occurred. Turn to page 10 to see if it's the married man, the single girl or the gay male in a relationship who's finding the most time to play.
"I was a competitive swimmer when I was young, so my summers were filled with swim meets and road trips,” recounts City Weekend’s newest Shanghai editor, Trista Baldwin. “I never really went to a full-on summer camp though.” After researching various summer camps and programs around Shanghai for this issue’s Parents & Kids feature (Shanghai Entertainment Guide, pg. E44), Baldwin is very impressed by what Shanghai has to offer. “It's really remarkable to see how small enclaves of people from around the world form communities here,” says Baldwin. “And the inclusive environment they try to create, even throughout the summer, is very encouraging.”
"At first I was really excited about writing a sex diary for City Weekend to be shared, anonymously of course, with all of Beijing and Shanghai, but then it just became too time consuming,” comments our single guy featured in this issue’s In China exploring the sex lives of expats, or sexpats (pg. 10). “After some negotiating with the editor, we decided that I didn’t need to write down EVERY sexual thought I had during the day, but to just record the top 10-20.” In CW's sexpat investigation, we seek to answer the question: Who's having sex and who's falling in love in the expat community? “I'm definitely not participating in the former or the latter, well, unless you count my imagination.”
As an investigative journalist, Jenn Wong will go to any lengths to get the story, even if it means damage to herself. “Matt [from Tag Team] and I met up in the early afternoon and he proceeded to get me very drunk indeed, but that’s just the kind of dedication I had to the story,” she says about the Beijing Entertainment Guide's City Feature (pg. E08) on Tag Team's upcoming two-day indie rock fest. “I didn’t mind the fact that it was too early to be wasted because it certainly needed to be done.” After many re-writes, and a few sobering cups of coffee, the story was finished. “It was a happy day,” says Wong, “and my liver is happy as well.”
