Xu Yin, Matt Schrader and Michael Armstrong

Truth is, we hadn’t really heard much about Ozomatli before Split Works lined them up for the Yue Festival. The name sounded more like a Mayan city, not the world's greatest funk band. But when we found out that instead of the usual whirlwind tour to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs, they would set up an impromptu band session with some migrant workers in Beijing, we were impressed. It took nine guys from Los Angeles to out us for the self-obsessed expats we are.

"It was a completely new environment for me when I first joined this enthusiastic working team," says Xu Yin, Shanghai's newest intern. After two weeks uploading Shanghai’s latest and greatest events and venues to the new City Weekend website, searching for material on the Internet and writing up her many discoveries, Yin has learned a lot about the new world of new media. "It's an amazing process, putting a piece of information on the website and then watching it take on a life of its own," Yin says. "Before this, I thought the editor's work was just writing, writing and writing. But now I would compare it to compiling an encyclopedia, covering broad fields ranging from art to fashion, internet and life. Yeah, I like it!"

"Uhh, what?” asked Matt Schrader, the newest addition to the Beijing editorial team, when it was announced that he would be bumped up from mere intern to editor, temporarily filling a vacancy. “Does that mean I get keys to the executive washroom?” No, but it did mean that he would be thrown into the ever-interesting world of Beijing cuisine head first. “What do I like most about the food world? I like how fast it’s changing. There’s always something new to try. Especially wine. I like the wine.” When he’s not hitting up wine tastings around town, he's treating his girlfriend to the restaurants he's discovered. “I’d have to say,” Schrader admits, “she likes my job almost as much as I do.”

"I thought it was a joke. I mean, a restaurant called 'Hooters'?" exclaimed Michael Armstrong. "I've been a bird watching enthusiast since I was little," he explains, "and the owl has always been a favorite, so an owl-themed restaurant was a dream come true." So what did he think of Hooters? "They serve chicken wings, and even the most inexperienced bird watcher knows, owls love chicken." The job also had a few unexpected benefits. "There were all these young, pretty girls there. They all love owls, too, and even had t-shirts with owls on them. " The experience was evidently inspiring and Armstrong is planning to open a restaurant centered around his other love: fruit. "I’m thinking: 'Melons.'"
