Sure the newest hip kid on the Beijing electronica block has a shopping mall (The Place) sitting on top of it, but Song won’t suffer commercial suffocation. Neebing, one of the founders of the Chinese techno scene, has tentacles spread throughout the global art-osphere. He wears designer glasses and used to play soccer with minimal tech superstar Namito. He knows what the newbie high roller class wants, and if the opening night featuring anti-mainstream avatar Coldcut is any indication, he’s out to give it exactly what it needs: taste. He likes to say Song is “stylish, not stupid.” The interior, designed by sculptor Zhong Song, is all wood and feels like a tree house for big kids. Acoustically, it’s like lounging inside a Bang and Olafsun speaker. During the day there’s simple bistro fare to pay the bills, at night expect a whole range of musical artisans to keep the place spinning.
