Fusion - Trader Vics Beijingers now have a place to indulge their exotic culinary fantasies as this popular, Oakland-based restaurtant chain makes its way to Beijing, bringing with it the sights and sounds of the South Pacific. Amidst hand-crafted tikis, Polynesian prints and live music we happily sipped our Trader Vics punch (¥58) and nibbled on the cosmo tidbits (¥98), a tantalizing sampler of BBQ ribs, crispy prawns, sesame pork and crab Rangoon, a deliciously crunchy wonton with a creamy crab center (it took all our effort not to order a second helping of the dish alone). The pork chop Hawaiian (¥138) was well worth the wait, its sweet and savory flavor complimented by smooth garlic mashed potatoes and onion marmalade, and the BBQ half-chicken (¥118) served with baby bok choy was also a hit, falling right off the bone and gone within minutes. With our bellies full and tastes sated, it was all we could do but stare at the alluring array of desserts, ultimately resigning ourselves to visions of lolling waves and starry skies and thoughts of the treats that would await us upon our return—crab included. -Erica Chen
