Day in the Life of: The Supermodel
Beijing fashion model Tina Zhang wears a miniskirt and high heel shoes while bouncing on a bed-all for the sake of haute couture.
Home-Chaoyang Park
8:00 a.m. The alarm goes off. I struggle to get up for my 9:30 a.m. photo shoot.
8:20 Wash up, still feeling tired.
8:55 Now I’m in a rush, so I pack my stuff in a hurry. No time for breakfast.
9:05 On the way to the studio we hit a traffic jam, as usual. So I clean out my handbag.
9:35 I’ve never been to the studio before so I call and ask directions. The taxi driver wanders around Fangzhuang Qiao for a while.
Studio
9:45 Me, the editor, the photographer and the stylist have all arrived. Today’s shoot is for a 10-page spring clothing spread for a fashion magazine. The stylist makes me up as the editor arranges the clothes and the photographer works on the lighting.
9:50 They gum my hair with gel. I shouldn’t have washed my hair this morning!
10:40 The hair style done, now to the make-up. It takes two hours to make me up before every shoot.
12:00 p.m. The make up is finally done and now I am starving to death. Good news: lunch just arrived. Bad news: we have to finish the first two sets of clothing before we can eat.
First Dress
12:05 p.m. Change into the first dress. Fabulous!
12:15 The photo shoot starts slowly as we adjust to everyone’s way of working.
12:20 We all gather around the computer to check out the trial photos. This is really important, as I need to adjust my pose and feeling according to the editor and photographer’s opinions.
12:30 Okay, the photo shoot officially starts.
12:50 The photos look great: a head start for everyone.
12:55 High-five with the editor. For a moment, I forget how hungry I am.
Second Dress
1:00 Change into the second dress.
1:05 Every dress comes with a pair of high heels. My feet hurt!
1:12 We choose a photo from literally hundreds of pictures.
1:30 The costume assistant returns the two dresses we just shot. I finally have my first meal today. The food’s not so bad for a work lunch.
2:15 Re-apply make-up, change the hair style and clothes. The hair style is designed according to the dress.
Third Dress
2:40 Work on the third dress. Everything is on track, so we speed up the shoot.
Fourth Dress
3:00 The stylist adjusts my hair for the fourth dress. The assistant dabs my face with the powder puff whenever the photographer pauses.
Fifth Dress
3:20 I’m wearing the fifth dress under dazzling spotlights. Two transparent boxes are set up as props.
Sixth Dress
3:40 I put on the sixth dress carefully. The neckband is so small that I’m afraid it will smear my make-up on it. The editor will kill me.
3:45 The photographer finds a spring bed for some fun effects. But it’s not so fun to jump on it while wearing 10-centimeters high heels.
4:10 I’m still jumping on the bed with the damn high heels. I have to pay attention to the height of each jump.
4:20 The photographer captures me at the very moment I’m jumping. I’m not allowed to muss my hair or clothing. “We’re working to promote the clothes,” he tells me.
Seventh Dress
4:35 Change again. Everyone is on the right track, I give the look that the photographer wants.
4:50 The photographer adjusts the light and we’re working on the next to the last dress.
5:20 “Great,” says the photographer; today’s work is done. Yeah!
5:30 I hurry over to the Yingke Club for hot yoga. Call my best friend and think up a place for dinner.
Yingke Yoga Club
6:20 Wash off make-up and change into yoga gear.
6:45 Yoga starts.
7:15 I’m tired from working the whole day. I lie flat in the 38-degree room and watch others.
7:40 I’m not here for the sauna, so I rouse myself to follow the others with the practice.
8:15 Finish the exercise, have a shower and change clothes.
Thai Chilli Restaurant
9:00 Meet my friend at the Thai restaurant. Dinner for me means sumptuous. The dishes really stimulate my appetite. Every dish is my favorite!
11:00 Pay the bill, head home.
Home
11:30 Finally back at home, totally exhausted.
11:40 I've run out of steam to check the email. Put on a DVD. Fall asleep before it’s half over.
THE VERDICT
Tina has been featured in ELLE, Trend and Frends magazines. The worse part about being a model? “I’m usually too busy to eat.” More importantly, does she have a boyfriend? “I’m single,” she reveals. A CW exclusive for you eligible bachelors out there!
