FASHIONISTA : A Look Less Ordinary

Candice is a special breed of girl, one that doesn’t need flashy LV or DG’s flaunted on her handbag nor designer duds. In fact, when a friend mistook her for an aging laopo based on her clothes, Candice was flattered, not insulted. See, in Candice's world of fashion there are three rules: 1. Vintage equal awesome. 2. Only wear recyclables. 3. Better alternative than boring. These guidelines allow Candice to piece together an entire outfit for under ¥40, sometimes even less! Take her self-described “ugly dress: matched with a white vintage Adidas jacket. The tacky blue and yellow plaid compliments the super '80s color scheme of the jacket. The dress was found in the Wudaokou Fashion Market. It was originally an apron that she made into a summer shift. She prides herself on being able to turn almost any discarded piece of clothing into something wearable and will often wear dresses that were originally skirts or make shorts out of carpenter pants-with paint still on them for authenticity. Beijing is a fashion playground for Candice as she roams the uniform market at Dongjia Shichang, where she buys workers outfits for under ¥50, then rips them up and has them tailored into new wardrobe pieces. She also likes such places like the Zoo Market (Dongwu Shichang) and Yashow Fashion Market for “joke” clothes like a complete old school Adidas track suit with matching shoes and socks. When Candice isn’t teaching our international youth about safe sex and the nitty gritty of AIDS education, you can find her flinging discs on the ultimate Frisbee team or at Fei Fei's, one of her favorite local tailors. We appreciate Candice for her “green” approach to fashion and fearless pursuit for the perfect vintage dress.

Yeah, City Weekend! Way to delve deep into the underground of Beijing's cutting edge fashion scene and find undiscovered gems for your readers. Oh wait, didn't I see this chick in your magazine before? That's right, she helped you discover that funny newfangled sport... what was it called... frisbee? Thank god for Candice, how did expat magazine editors know anything before she came around?
