FASHIONISTA: The Olympic Tourist
Long before China was chosen to host the 2008 Olympics, Christine Wu was a bright-eyed student at the International School of Beijing. Now pursuing Master's degrees in architecture and urban planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, it is more than just nostalgia that brings her back to the city she once called home. The rapid-fire pace of development that has defined this year's Olympics has cultivated an ideal environment to study groundbreaking strategies in the planning of mega-events and tourism. From overhauls in streetscaping, to the Village at Sanlitun, to the intricate fa?ade of the Bird's Nest, Christine is mesmerized by all elements of new Beijing. This photo shoot has brought back many memories for Christine, who fondly recalls seventh-grade sleepovers playing dress up with her best friend. Flaunting cheap makeup and overly-trendy styles, courtesy of pre-Ya Show Sanlitun, the photos of old times never cease to amuse and embarass. This time, however, she skipped the fake Adidas and instead found herself among the throngs of Olympic enthusiasts at Wangfujing's Olympic Flagship Store in search of souvenirs for friends and, of course, herself. The options were overwhelming and sometimes questionable, but amid the frenzy she managed to elbow her way to a stash of kitsch Fuwa memorabilia. Her top picks? This Fuwa tank top and Olympic Ring bracelets, hot out of the plastic bag. Paired with simple closet staples—black Mary Jane pumps and a short denim skirt—Christine is ready for any Olympic event or party. Finally, when not rooting for her favorite gymnast, Christine can be found wandering the city streets with her trusty camera, in search of beautiful photographs and inspirational design.
