Your father used to coach Tiger Woods. We have to ask, what’s your relationship with Tiger Woods? I’ve got several photographs of my dad and Tiger. I took a number of them. But it’s been years since we’ve met. Tiger is more a part of my dad’s life. That is his thing.

You have a golf school in China and have been coaching and playing for over 20 years. How did your father’s expertise influence you? Our school is founded on my father’s more than 60 years of golf experience and everything from the techniques he used to the experiences he had. I’ve had the tremendous privilege of learning from my dad. And I’ve had the benefit of teaching with other important instructors. But like my dad, I am still learning. Golf is unique in that no two strokes are alike. You must adjust to your student.

So what brought you to China? The discussion about coming to China and working here at DirectLink Golf started back in July 2008. I was approached and asked if I would be interested in teaching in China. I felt it would be the perfect fit. The culture here seems to really appreciate the elder masters. I first witnessed this when I came out in April with my father to see the golf facility.

How do you see golf in China? As a teacher, I appreciate the work ethic here. I’ve seen a lot of people that like to work and progress on the sport. From a coaching standpoint, you can’t ask for more. The number of juniors coming to play particularly thrills me. The large majority of my classes are juniors and beginners. It is exciting to see people embrace our teaching methods.

For someone just starting out, what would you recommend? Getting a good start is the most important aspect of golf. Finding a coach and learning the fundamentals of golfing, like how to hold the club and the proper posture, is essential. Much of my day is spent fixing bad habits that people have because they learned wrong from the start.
