Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a unique martial art derived from the Japanese form that involves grappling, ground fighting and even choke holds. Why did you decide to start teaching it here? I am trying to get local Chinese interested in the sport. China has had a lot of fitness sports arrive over the past few years like yoga and Pilates. I’ve always been interested in teaching this to the Chinese. I am the head instructor at our school, which has been open for roughly a year now. Jiu-Jitsu training can be used for self-defense, grappling tournaments or MMA competitions.
What do you focus on in your classes? We emphasize self-defense, specifically close quarter self defense. Mainly, I want to stress having fun. This is about getting a workout in a relaxing environment. We don’t focus on tournaments.
What got you into the sport in the first place? I was always interested in martial art and I’ve never been good with round ball [sports]. For me, competition has never been of any interest. I simply enjoy the workout. Why should someone in Beijing try Brazliian Jiu-Jitsu? Jiu-Jitsu is something fresh in Beijing. The sport is huge outside of China, but within the country there are about five schools where one can train, three of which are in Beijing. It’s a great workout. If you sit in an office most of the day, putting in this training really helps your body.
