Real Men Play Field Hockey
When did the club start? Are you the founder? Yes I am. I started it in August last year. Not to be rude, but isn’t field hockey for girls? No, no, no! It’s for men as well! There are good men's teams from Holland, Pakistan, India ... It's played as a men's sport all over Europe. So you have co-ed games or practices? Yes, it’s mixed. What would you say the ratio is of men to women? It’s different every week. I think there are more females on the email list, but more guys actually turn up to the practices. How many people participate? The most at any time is about 40 people, but we have 80 on the email list. We have Argentine, French, Belgian, German, Dutch and American players, as well as 20 locals. Any big events coming up in the world of Beijing field hockey? We’ve just got back from the Hong Kong Easter Mixed Nines Tournament. On May 24 and 25 we'll go to Shanghai for two matches against the Shanghai club. We might go to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bankok. Any favorite memories with the Beijing Hockey Club? We played the Chinese ladies' provincial team once. They were very good. We also played against the men, but we cheated. They only had eight players and we had 32. Who won? We did, because we cheated.
