Raising Good Sports
What does Sports Beijing do? Sports Beijing is a community-based, nonprofit organization. We organize youth sports and recreation programs. The organization kind of evolved from a grassroots group of expats in the mid-1990s. This spring is our 10 year anniversary. Congratulations. Were you with them back then? No, it was started by a group of parents that were here in Beijing at the time with their families. I had moved to Beijing later with my family and put my son in the SBJ soccer program and would volunteer as a soccer coach. After my corporate job finished, we decided to stay. About how many families are involved? We have about 1000 families involved and 1500 to 1600 children from 42 different nationalities. How does it work? As a community-based organization, we rely on volunteer support from parents to help organize and coach. Expats are typically busy people. This type of organization makes it simple for parents to volunteer and be part of their children’s sport activities. One of our priorities is to provide children the opportunity to participate in sports the way they would in their home country. What’s coming up? We have about 22 programs in the Fall.
