NEW BARS: Minty | Gulou
Close to Home
When former actress Pu Shasha started this bar as a hobby, she admittedly didn’t know the first thing about running it. But this one-room tucked away in a hutong hits the mark as an eccentric spot for hipster locals. The bar is crammed with tables, couches, armchairs and even a Japanese tea table. Most nights patrons pull on Tsingtao (¥15) and sip cocktails (¥20-30) while taking in live music by ethnic Buyei percussionists or Chinese singer-guitarists. The adventurous try the home-brewed liquor (¥25) available in strawberry-mint or pineapple-pepper. Movies are projected on the wall on Mondays and Thursdays. Bar-goers and musicians are a mix of the owner’s friends, and Pu Shasha is the primary barkeep most nights. With the early closing time, Minty feels like drinking at a friend’s home.
