Spark: Taipei Megaclub

Revelers enter Spark through a dark mirrored cube lit only by a grid of laser beams. It’s a glitzy flourish that would look cheap on Gongti, but this Taipei megaclub chain executes it with such precision that even seasoned clubbers are awestruck. Spark delights in these kind of cheap thrills, like the iPad menus. Cocktails are expensive (¥70), and are weak, and the music is a confusing mish-mash of hip-hop, chart hits and house. At least the perfectly tuned sound system never overpowers the voices of the capital’s beautiful people chatting in the surrounding lounge.

Ugh. This place is so LAME. I enjoyed it right up until I got through the super cool laser cube. After that it's the same crap that you'll find in any Gongti club- albeit with a noticeably larger dance area. (But even that was marred on the edges with seating areas that are clearly meant to be cheap VIP booths but were overrun with the big crowd that filled the place on the night that I was there.) There's a roped off line to get in for no other reason than having one makes you look exclusive: They never stopped letting people in; they just made them wait. With the lackluster drinks, slow service and incredibly lame music (10 30-second Michael Jackson clips mixed together in a row does NOT sound cool- it's offensive because you don't actually play any of them and let people dance!) it's obvious that the only reason that people go here is because lots of people go here. It'll be a flash in the pan and fade away in a month or two.
