Wilbur W. Hsu is a volunteer teacher with CAI - a charity that organizes extra-curricular classes for kids in migrant schools in Beijing. CW sat down with Hsu to find out more about his basketball classes.

Can you tell us a bit about CAI?
CAI is an internationally-based non-profit organization in both Beijing and Shanghai that focuses on developing self-confidence, commitment and courage in migrant children through arts and sports. Every Saturday, I travel with three other volunteers to Dongba School for Migrant Children, located outside the Fifth Ring Road, and spend two hours teaching basketball techniques and rules of the game. [Afterwards] students spend about 30 minutes writing in a diary. The diary entry is a great tool to not only get feedback, but allow the students to express their feelings and, in turn, develop self confidence.

Why did you join?
I can attribute a lot of my success to what I have learned from playing sports. The lessons in teamwork, cooperation, commitment and dedication can be gained from sports, and to be able to teach these lessons to migrant children is a privilege for me. In the end it is not about whether or not these girls become the next star of the WNBA, it is all about seeing the confidence and hope in these girls’ faces that is the most important goal.
