Wine tastings are suddenly all the rage in Beijing. Purple Lips Wine Tasting Shop opened in April, Block 8 Ladies’ Night wine tastings have gone from monthly to biweekly and wine pairing dinners abound. Sanlitun Sequoia’s weekly wine tasting, however, is a favorite that’s been around for years. There is no wine snobbery at Sequoia, though there are many regulars who are quite knowledgeable about grapes, making it a great environment for both novices and connoisseurs to connect, share a love of wine and discuss the latest happenings in Beijing. Owner Frank Siegel recently expanded the wine options, offering a selection of reasonably priced vintages for purchase. Many Friday night customers readily buy a bottle (one favorite: Domaine des Olivier Cotes du Rhone 2006, ￥100), which they pop open on the spot.
