Happy Earth Day everyone!

Earth Day this year is themed "A Billion Acts of Green." This has got me thinking about all the different ways I can help my family become more environmentally aware.

One of the easiest ways is to get involved with your school's parent councils to initiate a project to help educate your children. For example, over at 3e International School, the Grade 1 students have an ongoing project entitled "Going Green." Now, whenever I lift the dustbin lid, I hear, “No Mummy, that needs to go in the recycling bag!”

Recycling isn't just for plastic bottles and cans. You can recycle clothing, too. And thanks to [Roundabout Charity Store] (http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/listings/community/charities/has/roundabout-charity-distribution-store/) it's easier than ever. Once you've finished cleaning out your closet, deliver the unwanted goods to their store out in Shunyi. But, if you have eight bags or more, Roundabout will happily them from you. Books and furniture are also welcome and should be in nearly new condition. Items not immediately desired by one of the 18 charities that Roundabout works with will be sold in the store. The cash will go towards the purchase of goods for the less fortunate.

For those lucky enough to have a garden in this vast urban jungle, how about planting your own vegetable patch? Laitai Flower Market has everything you need to embrace your inner gardener. Seeds start at RMB2 for a packet and tools from around RMB5. Small tool sets perfect for children can also be found here. Other great finds include a fabulous bright floral water can for RMB80.No garden? Create a small herb garden on your window sill instead.

Finally, for eco-friendly items, look to [Babygro] (http://www.babygro.com.cn/). It has an extensive range of organic accessories along with the Avedo range of toiletries. Similarly, [Counting Sheep] (http://www.countingsheepboutique.com/home.php) stocks the Babyganics product range starting from around RMB95. Their Ergo Organic Baby Carrier is a must have for new mums, made from organic twill for maximum comfort for both mother and baby.

Here's a suggestion for celebrating Earth Day everyday. And it's even kinda fun! "When it's yellow, let it mellow." Remember that quote. It's posted in our restrooms. That's what we say in my house about peeing. No flushing for pee-pee. SAVES WATER. But if you've got to take a numero 2, by all means FLUSH away.
