How Yellow Are You?
China’s campaign against smut yields up some unusual bad guys
It’s no secret the Chinese government has taken an increasingly firm stance against all-things-spiritually-polluting, anything from deviant films, to mentions of deviant films in the press, to online porn. The latest twist is the rapid spread through cyberspace of the catch-phrase “very yellow, very violent” after a 13-year-old girl used it to describe a porn website during a CCTV interview. The phrase immediately prompted creation of a Digg clone (hen.huang.hen.bao.li) whereby users could submit posts, classified into four categories “violent, very violent, yellow, very yellow.” Violent we understand, but yellow? Wasn’t the Emperor himself called huangdi—the Yellow Emperor? Don’t the Chinese call themselves “sons and daughters of the Yellow Emperor”? And what about the Yellow River? What’s the Yellow River ever done to anyone? We patiently await further clarification.
Guangzhou Upside Down
The world’s longest inverted roller coaster opened in Guangzhou over the Spring Festival holiday. Built at a cost of US$27 million by Swiss designers, it is the latest thrill ride at the Chimelong Paradise amusement park. The Dmonster measures over a kilometer in length, features a near vertical fall of 80 meters and reaches top speeds of 120 km per hour. In case you’re wondering what kind of chills and thrills an “inverted” coaster has in store, consider that the train runs below the tracks with your feet dangling in mid-air. Yikes!
