ON THE DL: The Forbidden Kingdom | Crystal Castle | and more
Movies
The Forbidden Kingdom
Thinly realized, yet entertaining and funny, it’s the story of an American kid who, by way of a generic Hollywood premise, winds up in a kind of mythical Buddhist/Shaolin heaven where he has to help Jackie Chan save Sun Wukong (a blond Jet Li) from imprisonment.
Street Kings
In a film just as thinly realized, entertaining and funny, Keanu Reeves is a corrupt cop on the streets of L.A. out for justice. But who's buying Common, a hemp-wearing vegan spiritualist, as a thug? Not us.
Music
Crystal Castles - “Crimewave”
Crystal Castles fall into a category of music yet to be defined in any coherent way, but the release of their first studio album gives us a little more to work with. It's a well-orchestrated hodgepodge of electro minimalism, 8-bit Atari sounds and pleasing lyrics.
Kid Cudi - “Day N Night”
Likely to be billed alongside Chromeo, Kid Sister, Kavinsky and other hipster heavyweights from the Fool's Gold catalogue, this newcomer easily gets lost in the crowd. However, there's something about his stripped-down production and infectious spacey-stoner lyrics that'll have you chanting this one for days to come.
