DJ Sassy Pandez is a male audiophile's dream: one part DJ, one part model ... and, well, her every "part" is amazing. Named "the Sexiest DJ in the World" by Maxim magazine, Sassy Pandez has been settling hearts ablaze the world over, inciting chest palpitations both with her jaw-droppingly good looks and even more so with her body-thumpin' hip-hop joints. Sassy (wo)mans the decks at Bling this Thursday (Dec. 11) for a night that will surely leave you hot and bothered. We chatted with Sassy about modeling vs. music, playing for P. Diddy and what the future holds.
You were a model first, then a DJ, right? Tell me a bit about how you first got into DJing.
That’s not exactly true. I was into music and DJing way before I started modeling. I first tried to DJ at age 7! I never thought of it as a career. It was my cousin who encouraged me into DJing; he’s a DJ in Miami.
Given that fashion and nightlife are so tightly interwoven, did you find it easy to make the move into the DJ world?
Like I said, the music came first. In fact my model agency got mad when my DJ career took off because I was always out. I love fashion but I’ve moved into swimwear modeling now as I like to be curvy; it’s my natural shape.
You've played in China before, yes? What is your take on the scene here?
F***ing amazing! I love China!
You've traveled the globe as both a model and a DJ. What are your favorite parts of touring?
I love hot countries. I’m half Latino and need to be in a hot climate! Well that’s my excuse! But if the club’s hot, that’s OK.
Speaking of hot, what's hot in your record bag right now?
"Pop Champagne” by Ron Brownz, “Krazy” by Pitbull, “What Them Girls Like” by Ludacris, and “Come Over” by Estelle. Estelle and I started out at the same time and she used to MC for me sometimes. She rocks!
How does it feel to have worked with some of the top names in the business (P Diddy to name just one)?
That P Diddy party was crazy. I also liked playing for Young Jeezy, Fat Joe, Jay Z, Beyonce, and my mum!
For some DJs, it's all about the music. For others, it's the connection they feel with partygoers on the dance floor. What's your favorite part of playing out?
The connection with the crowd. That’s why I prefer clubs to radio. But music is a big part of my life in general.
What are your future plans or goals in terms of both music and modeling?
Well, it’s not good to talk about things until you’ve done them, right? But next year I’m off to DJ at Carnival in Brazil, Singapore and Bahrain. And I’ve got some cool photo shoots coming up. Hope ya got my 2009 calendar.
Any thoughts on your gig here in Beijing at Bling?
Yes, I can’t wait to come back, my last time in Beijing was crazy! Can anyone bring me a monkey? I love monkeys!
