Description

This restaurant is a hit with the locals and laowai. The Beijing duck is delicious, as are the other traditional Chinese dishes. But it is Huajia's traditional decor, subtle lighting and layout that stand out. Their main location, off Guijie, has a beautiful outdoor dining patio nestled in the back of a restored hutong.

This is my go-to place to bring out-of-town friends for Peking duck. My favorite part is the fruit slices they provide to put inside of the duck. And I know it sounds weird...but you have to try duck with sugar (dip the crispy skin in the sugar and wrap it up). Once you try it, you won't go back. I ask for sugar at every duck place I go to. I also like the show you can enjoy on the first floor. Usually starts around 8pm, so make your reservations for around 730pm or later so that you get dinner AND a free show!

Hua Jia Yi Yuan remains a Guijie classic. Aim for a table in the courtyard out back. Or, if it's your first trip to Hua's, you may want to catch the nightly show inside, which includes Peking Opera, juggling and the face-changing dance. Hua's is a delicious destination to impress out-of-towners, and its menu is strong enough to keep bringing back locals. The Peking Duck is more contemporary than traditional, with no spring onions and more sweet dipping options, but it does the trick. The shrimp dishes here are all stunners.

Affordable and GOOD! Order their specialty Chicken dish, forgot the name but it has a peanut sauce. Props to Hua Jia Yi Yuan.

It has been a while since I went back, but I took a vegetarian friend here recently when he visited and we were duly impressed with the tofu and mushroom stir fry dishes. The duck was okay, but everything else was very palatable.

Great restaurant, full recommendation: I had friends coming from outside and wanted to treat them for Beijing duck and other typical chinese dishes. Food met my high expectations (only the rips were only so-so) and the duck was a dream. Service was extremly friendly (!) and we had our own private room facing to the inside of a traditional Siheyuan. Furniture and decoration is top. Only downside, price was a little bit higher than expected. 900RMB for 5 people.with drinks.

Many friends have raved about Huajia Yiyuan, but its wannabe chic design, shabby furniture, and exceedingly mediocre food left me feeling like the emperor has no clothes. Perhaps the original courtyard location on Guijie proper is better, but personally I'd rather spend my money at any of the Da Dong restaurants.

Sucked! What sucked about it? Well it's just not that much better than the 1.3 billion other Chinese restaurants on Gui Jie, but charges way more. The Ma La is more Ma Ma Hu Hu. If you're thinking about bringing out of towners to a true Chinese restaurant, might I suggest Baguobuyi. There's one in the Avic Hotel across from Jianwai SOHO. Or the Bianyifang at Chongwenmen.

Despite delivering the same items on the menu as its parent restaurant in Guijie, this branch isn't just as nice, and you can't get the atmosphere of the original Huajiayiyuan. For the 2 times I went there, I actually had relatively average service. Huajiayiyuan, yes! But not this one, the one in further west in Guijie!

Great place! If you're a big fan of mustard, then you should try their Beijing duck as their sauce is no traditional kind... they added a bit of mustard flavor and you can wrap some fruits with it. A pretty fresh try to get a break from the old traditional taste. Love the dark beer of their own brewery... but it's off menu the 2nd time i went there very recently... so that's a bit disappointed. (sold out in Winter???) Hope they'd sell that beer again!

This is the spot where I usually take visitors or Beijing newbies on the first evening - perfect for trying the standard Chinese dishes, Beijing duck, and having a first sip of Erguotou with a big group. They sometimes have Chinese mask dances, and you should try to get a seat in the back right courtyard which is really nice old style, with cleaner toilets and quicker waitresses (because you have a minimum charge per person). The fact that you cannot reserve a table at busy times can be a bit frustrating but the english "I need help!!"-waving signs for tourists in the waiting lobby will totally keep you and your friends busy for quite some time.
