Description

Once upon a time, this underground Gongti club was launched by Acupuncture Records, and it was one of the only EDM venues in town. After many years and the eruption of techno in Beijing, it has lost some of its underground, alternative edge, but it remains a hub for those who yearn for loud, house, techno, and dance music.

Yesterday night was amazing. Fantastic techno from Boro Lo. A lot of interesting international people, lots of great fun!!! Finally I've found 'my club' in this city. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, fantastic 'normal' people and really cool place to spend a night.

Digging the new layout of the club. It's really starting to take shape. I'm told that the smaller bar will even be open most nights of the week, with the big one open only for big weekend parties. This will be a great place to chill early evening with cool people, decent prices and of course great music.

Same like Miao said: Just want to say all the feedback is much appreciated. We know there are many many things we need to improve at the new Lantern, and we are working on it, so every time you come here you'll see some different details. @bjclubfan: We are open to different electronic genres, up and coming djs and promoters, but sometimes have a difficult time find them. If you know someone good, I can be reached at miao@acupuncture-records.com : ) Thanks again guys, we won't stop trying.

like the place but... Would like a little bit more variety of electronica. Whoever's in charge of lighting needs to be fired. It's not a proper strobe light but the way the lights spasticly sweep the floor it has exactly th same effect and non stop for hrs is just nauseating. Might as well just tie the lighting into some random number generator.

The great thing about lantern, except for the amazing tech beats and the various DJ's, is the great mix of people. People of all different ages, origin and occupations gather to share their love for techno music, while sipping affordable quality drinks. If you like techno, no need to look any further.

Lantern is no normal club I have ever been to. For a start its underground and the entrance is a giant glowing pyramid, the dance floor is huge and the music is loud enough to make you dance even if you don’t want to. Beijing’s finest techno, minimal and electro club is situated just off of the Workers Stadium in Sanlitun and is definitely getting marked down on my map. Lantern retains is exclusiveness by only opening on Friday and Saturday and each week offers Beijing’s party animals a sanctuary for the night, laying down the craziest parties around while feeding you music until dawn. So if you want to taste the finest music Beijing has to offer and you like to party a little bit too much then Beijing finally has the answer, and it begins with an L.

@ Miao, It's great that you are taking notice of feedback, because bjclubfan raised a valid point; everyone I speak to has also noticed a certain "narrowness" to the scope of music style in Lantern; but seriously how far are you guys looking? There is so

Went back to Lantern second weekend and caught a phenomenal set by Weng Weng. So I'm kicking up my rating a notch--solid 4 stars for this exciting new club.

**What's great** - Awesome venue. The Lantern club ROCKS. I love the balance between underground feeling and higher end club. The lights, decor, everything has a minimal feeling to it and a great warehouse feeling to it. The space is huge, let's hope they fill it regularly. - Drink prices. Great balance in price. Not too cheap but not super expensive. - Marketing, branding and general acupuncture style is spot on as always :) **What's not so great** - Music Policy. We know acupuncture are big minimal techno fans, but if they continue their old policy of restricting the big nights to just minimal techno, the club will slowly die and the whole scene will not move forward. Both old Lantern and The House suffered the same problem. People just got bored with the same music every single week. Take some advice guys and get some variety going. There is a massive electronic music scene in Beijing that covers House, Techno, Bass, Electro plus some awesome Live Electronic acts. Why not make Saturdays your Techno night and open up Friday for an alternative electronic genre each weekend? You keep the techno focus, but you also mix things up a little. - New Talent. Where are all the new up and coming DJs in Beijing? Elvis, Weng Weng etc are great DJs, but it’s tiring seeing the same headline acts all the time. Take a chance and let some young blood have a shot. - Sound System. It sounded a bit week. It’s a large venue and could do with rear speakers and some big subs.

Lantern's open and Beijing finally has a decent spot for underground dance music again. And if the music improves from what I heard over the first weekend, then this place will get another star from me. The space is cool, a big underground cavern, high ceilings, with tables and a big curving bar. Raised DJ booth. All good. Now the not so good stuff: 1. Sound system--sound was flat. 2) Music--the sets I heard Saturday weren't exciting. They were okay, but not exciting. Acupuncture is known for minimal tech and and their attempt at housiness wasn't 100% successful. Gongti effect? Who knows. But really you ought to try to blow people away on your opening weekend. 3) minimum charges for all tables. I was told that all tables were RMB1,200 minimum charge, even the second floor tables in the very very back. The only free seating is at the bar and a bench at the front entrance and bench at the back exit. Very Gongti, but not what I was expecting out of an underground dance club. If the tables strategy pays off, I certainly hope they take the money and roll it into a better sound system. if they do that and continue to open the decks to Beijing's best DJs and keep pushing their own DJs to throw more challenging sets, this place will be magic.
