Description

This cafe serves up an extensive range of tapas and a selection of hot dishes from pasta to steaks in a cozy setting. Though the menu isn't entirely Spanish, prices are reasonable and the spicy tuna with aubergine comes highly recommended.

The only words to describe Olas Tapas Cafe are ho-hum. There aren't many other tapas restaurants in Beijing, so choice is limited. But if one is going to compare, Olas doesn't stack up to the others. Sure, it is food. But that's really where it stops.

I love spanish tapas, but would this place would not be my first choice. Their sangria left much to be desired and their food and service did not live up to their high prices.

After my first visit to this place, I happened to come back couple more times and I have to say I have to second lumdimsum. Sometime I go there and got my order tasted really salty. Another time, they're kinda bland. Their sangria is hmm... ow-kay but definitely not the best. When I saw Olas in Gourmet Month list, I am curious with what they offer during this period. Judging by their set menu and the price, I would say better to order a la carte than taking the Gourmet Month set menu. But still, I like their tiramisu and lava cake. Their salad is not bad too.

OLAS Tapas Café is a casual Gourmet Month meal I’ve been trying to hit up either for lunch or dinner considering I’m in Sanlitun area basically every day. I’m a big fan of Spanish tapas and the gourmet month menu looked pretty good – with an assortment of cold and hot tapas and dessert for only RMB 99. HUGE disappointment. First of all, the hot chocolate I ordered was not hot at all (more like luke warm), the entire gourmet month meal was basically 2 plates of an assortment of tapas – one plate with olives, red peppers, itty-bitty mini croquettes, and even smaller bacon and shrimp skewers. The second plate was a bit better with a lamb chop, chicken breast on garlic bread, and beef. Last was a scoop of ‘homemade’ vanilla ice cream. Luckily, my friends were more interested in other tapas dishes, so we got an assortment of tapas plus a pasta dish and extra desserts. Not only was Olas the first disappointing CW gourmet month meal with its miniature portions, and poor to mediocre quality and taste, all the food was either too salty or not salty enough, too oily and greasy, and overall blah. If you go, don’t bother ordering the Gourmet Month meal. It’s not good value and I think you’d be better off just ordering some tapas off the regular menu. It's easy to order an assortment of tapas with a group of friends (most tapas come in 3’s). As I like to end things on a good note, I'd recommend the camembert croquette and mushroom risotto, which are both pretty decent. We ordered a wide range of tapas to share - everything we had was very tasty, including the fried camembert, chicken breast, prawns wrapped in bacon, potato croquettes, chirozo, garlic prawns, etc...and of course, sangria's all round! Excellent they varied the size of the tapas to cater for the size of our group. There were five of us, so they made sure there were 5 lamb chops, 5 chicken breasts, etc...rather than having us order 2 serves of the tapas. More surprising that a Chinese cash register could calculate 1.67 servings of tapas (as shown on the bill!). Finished the night with homemade vanilla and hazelnut icecream.

Erm... honestly, as nice as the service was, my taste buds weren't dancing with excitement throughout the meal. We had... 1) Goat cheese & anchovies bruschetta (combination was waaaaaayyyy to salty - maybe we should've gone with dried fruits instead) 2) Sauteed forest mushrooms, mixed skewered meat & Beef bruschetta was so la la - nothing to shout about. Salad and Lava cake was nothing out of the ordinary... So all in all, an ordinary meal for the night. p.s. Dinner came up to RMB 400 for 2 (2 drinks included) :)

As what duncanshaunsmith said in his review above, it is a very pleasant little cafe. We ordered spanish omelette; bruschetta with grilled chicken breast, green pepper and cheese; chorizo; and one of our favorite, shrimp wrapped with bacon. All of those foods were really good. We also ordered tiramisu and lava cake. Tiramisu is really rich in taste, you can really feel the rum inside it. Chocolate lava cake, they make the best lava cake that I've ever had so far. Service was good. Plus thing is they have WiFi too. Definitely will come back again.

A very pleasant little cafe. Liked the salads a lot. Though a tad over dressed, they were rammed with tasty fillings and no thousand island in sight. The mushroom risotto was also a joy. Service was friendly and prompt. Well worth a return.
