Description

Punjabi hits a home run (with a cricket bat, of course) in terms of serving up some of the most authentic Indian food in Beijing. All that on top of a dinner buffet with unlimited beer and set lunches for a steal that fills your stomach without emptying your wallet.

Students at the Canadian International School of Beijing organized a school-wide social, and The Punjabi Indian Restaurant catered this event. Not only was the food delicious, the members of this establishment took the time to teach our students how to manage the timing of food distribution, how to properly handle food, keep the food at safe temperatures, and have fun serving the food at this party! The onion bhaji was cooked on location to ensure it stayed crispy and fresh! The Punjabi Indian Restaurant really went out of their way to make this event a special one!

Having read so many fantastic reviews about this place we decided to give it a go, despite having been loyal to a different restaurant for so long. What a great decision! I can hand on heart say that this is the best Indian food that I have had in Beijing in the years I've been here, and it is so nice to find a place with some real distinction between its dishes and that has such great fresh flavours in its food. Only had takeaway so far (which incidentally arrived in record breaking time), and we are looking forward to going into the restaurant for a meal one night. I highly recommend this place!

A real INDIAN food in Beijing. The first time I came here was a year back and I had some " Parathas " with some made Indian pickles. I tell you the food reminded me about my school days back home. The whole atmosphere is so easy and relaxing to really chill out. I also remember the other day I had some " Kathi Roll " filled with cottage cheese, in India we call it " Paneer " ...... The other restaurant in Beijing are just here to make money out of their business and that's it. NO FEELING .... but Punjabi Rocks !! I m heading back to Beijing after one month of traveling and I can't wait to get back to Punjabi for some real food. I am sure by now Gireesh ( the owner ) will have some new things on his menu. Punjabi is a " Little India " of Beijing - MUST VISIT RESTAURANT !!

Yours was very good, only reason it wasn't 4 stars or 5 was because the food was just too cold, not heated enough. Otherwise it would be definitely as good as the other places! My friend lived in India, and she came with us to Punjabi. She loved it too, just thought it needed to be warmer as well. :)

Dear Lip3, Hello. My name is Gireesh, and I read your review. I believe this is from the website : http://www.bestfoodinchina.net/content/punjabi And the rest of your reviews as well. Just read the rest of your reviews for other businesses and saw that you have more or less given a 5 star rating to the other Indian / other restaurants. but have only given 2 stars to Punjabi. Do you have any suggestions / comments which might help us to improve? Thanks, - Gireesh. :)

Stepping into Punjabi, you feel like you have been transported to India. Decorated with plush white couches, murals of India and beaded drapes you feel like you are in a decadent lounge. And with the restaurant’s viewing window, you can step into the world of the Indian chefs. Punjabi is in the process of revamping their menu to include 30 wines from various countries like Spain, New Zealand and France, as well as adding new dishes to the menu that they have been experimenting with in the buffet. They already have a vast array of whiskey, rum, scotch, cognac, and good champagne. The buffet is temperature controlled to maintain freshness and has a large sampling of various Indian variations, though the food could be much warmer. You can get an excellent Gulab Jamun and Dal Gongo Jamuna, and an array of well-cooked dishes for only 88 rmb. A must try is the Jeer aloo and Na Vrattan Korma, which were gorgeous, and the Afghan chicken tandoori was smoked bbq style. The Garlic Naan was very strong on the garlic and a great compliment to the food. The dishes come with mint sauce, tomato sauce and tamin sauce, which were very flavorful, and every dish can be ordered mild medium or very spicy. This includes any buffet dishes, and the staff is happy to bring you a different portion to your request. As a suggestion, I recommended you ask for it spicier, as they try to make it milder for the locals, but can taste slightly bland for those westerners who live and die curry. The highlights were unexpectedly the Indian desserts, especially since when one thinks of Indian food you think of curry not dessert, but the Rasmalite which was milk based fried cheese, tasted like a thick angel cake with a great saffron punch. The Indian fruit pudding tasted like a banana split and banana cream pie, and was delectable. But the winner was the Carrot Pudding; it was like no carrot before. Not sweet or bitter, it was creamy and crunchy and was savory on the tongue. All in all Punjabi is a good place to escape China and get your fill of Indian food. Punjabi caters to the Saudi Arabian Embassy, and even Indian tour groups, which says a lot of this establishment. Soon the restaurant will even have a Bhangra dance show. Punjabi will remind you of India and you won’t want to step outside back onto Lucky Street.

Dear Taihaole, Thank you for the feedback regarding the food we have and also for giving suggestions about the drinks. Actually we dont serve Yanjing Beer in the restaurant, its Tsingtao. But I get your point. We are in the process of finalizing a new menu and creating a new drinks menu as well with more wines, more mixed drinks and better options for beers :) We shall also we adding draft beer to the menu. Kindly bear with us for a short while while we try to do this ASAP. Hope to see you soon and Welcome always! :) - Gireesh.

I really like the food at this restaurant actually, especially cold starters. But 20 kuai for a TIN of yanjing? come on. . . . at least put it in a glass if you are going to charge that much - make me think Im getting service. Food is very reasonable, but price of beer made the whole trip more expensive than going out for a curry in London.

Dear Terence, Thank you for putting the word out about the kind of experience you had @ Punjabi. Yes, the kootu paratha was an interesting one. We had actually never heard of it before, and but some quick googling fixed that! haha. The 1st version made by one of my chefs was the one he had heard about when he was in Chennai. But the one you talked about which is quite famous in Malaysia was quite a new and interesting recipe for us as well! Thank you for it! We give you credit for teaching us something new! :D Next time you are here, just let us know about the spice level of anything you order and we can fix it for you immediately! Enjoy the snow! - Gireesh. :)

HI gireesh, Was at your restaurant on Sunday afternoon. Really nice curries. The kootu paratha was nice. I really liked they fact that you did a second version when I said the first one was not really what I used to get. Thumbs up for that. One comment though..the masala tea could have been spicier. Anyway, it was a nice dining experience. Cheers. Terence

Hi all. Stumbled upon this site and quite surprisingly upon a review site for Punjabi restaurant. I've just moved to Beijing a week ago and discovered Punjabi 2 days ago. I have to admit, as soon as i stepped in, everything, from the ambience, a very friendly owner (Gireesh), and the food, took me right back to India. This restaurant competes with many Indian restaurants i've eaten around the world. Who cares about the rates when the food is so good. Having said that, it's pretty reasonable anyways. I would recommend every Indian who wants to enjo some "ghar ka khaana", visit this place.

Originally coming from Jalandhar in India, I got a chance to go to the Punjabi Indian restaurant on Lucky street and was really impressed with the buffet they had on Tuesday for a moderate price of 68 rmb. There were a large variety of about 20 items and unlimited beer to choose from, and the buffet dishes they have, were the 1st I have ever seen. completely automatic! The owner told me that they got it imported from some company in the UK. The restaurant was also very kind enough to arrange for hotel and Beijing tour reservation for my family and I, who are here for 2 days. Overall a highly satisfying experience!

I don't need blaring Bollywood videoclips in the background to realize I'm dining at an Indian restaurant. Items such as "aloo gobhi" and "baingan bharta" (one of my favorites, by the way) are all the give away we need, thank you. It's not the best Indian in Beijing, but it's definitely worth it, once you get past the bleak decor and the girls and guys happily bobbing their heads on the screen. The staff is attentive and courteous, the prices are reasonable and so far, all the dishes I had were totally delicious. Being a vegetarian, I don't know from experience whether the lamb dishes are any good, but according to my friends, they're quite good. I was going to rate it with 3 stars, but they get a bonus one for their delivery service.

I am delighted to get see the feedback to the review. Many restaurant owners in Hongkong do communicate in this way a lot with their customers and I am happy to see Beijing change the HK way. About our lunch experience, here we go. I was put off by the metal plate, as my rice got cold by the time I could begin to eat the rice as I first tried eating the Nan bread. I was in the Wash room when my friend ordered the Set Lunch as she was treating me for lunch .I dont know what she ordered but there was this chicken curry and one more curry and surely some other side dishes like yoghurt and cucumber. Though the plate was looking full, we did not like anything else than the chicken curry which we used with the bread and the rice. We surely asked your chinese staff (my chinese friend asked her) if we could get soup in the set lunch, and the waiter said no and just then never came back . I tried to ask for Samosas or Tandoori chicken and was given the menu in hand. The waiter or the manager understood that we were trying seeking change of food of what was served to something we like than what was in our plate ,but we were handed the menu to order separately. I surely didnt want to order as my friend was treating me for lunch. The chinese people love soup and I love soup too and most set lunches -even the 25 rmb set lunches have some soup .(may be the quantity is less). Because my friend was paying for lunch I could not order for the lunch though I would have loved to order some Barbeque like Tandoori Chicken or Samosas. Why dont you guys make a policy to serve these tasty food on more days? or to give to some customers who ask for it as part of Set lunch. I also asked the waiter in the Nan bread there were some black seeds what they are and I didnt like them and I was suggesting change of my Nan bread but the Indian waiter could not explain clearly and did not change my bread . I was so particular but he murmered something to himelf or me or he was wanted to say something , but he could not say. I was particulary upset and could not complete my lunch as he didnt change my Nan bread. Also he didnt come back to me as he was attending some telephone call perhaps for a long time.By the time he was back we were through. We visited sometime on the weekday last week and time was about sometime around 1 or later. I tried eating the rice ,but It had gone cold so I was more frustrated.(Please try to imagine as a customer rather than a owner). Also please keep in mind a 48 rmb for a chinese person is lot of money for lunch and they want to be satisfied completely. I am sure If you were there as a Owner at the restaurant and not travelling you would have offered some Tandoori chicken or Samosa or some soup or changed our rice (because it got cold) or changed our Nan bread ,and things would have been fine. I am leaving for Hongkong for Christmas tomorrow but would be back sometime in Jan 1st week and would try your restaurant again for dinner perhaps . Thanks for invitation again and surely I take your offer and will visit your restaurant soon.

Dear HongKongGirl, Hi. I am Gireesh, the owner of Punjabi. I have been traveling extensively for the last few weeks and have not been in the restaurant, but there are 2 Indian managers takin care of the place. Also 1 of my chinese staffs speaks perfect English. I inquired with the staff regarding your experience. Can you tell me when did you go? So I can check up with them the details of what has happened? You said that there were just 2 curries and rice, etc. I believe they must have informed you that you ordered the Punjabi's Indian set lunch, featuring a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian option. Lunch includes two curries, one dal, yogurt, rice, naan, dessert and a salad, all for RMB48. Since our set lunch is different everyday (different dishes but same combination) Samosas, tandoori chicken etc might not have been in it that day. Also, the staff always informs the customers what is on the menu in the set lunch while the customer orders. I have also noticed that you have been writing quite a few reviews about Indian / Pakistani restaurants in Beijing on different sites and all of them as negative, except for one particular Indian restaurant... Please feel to send me a message on this directly. or you can email me direct <punjabibj@ gmail.com>. I shall follow this case up personally with you, and once I am back in Beijing (about a week) I would like to invite you back to my restaurant and personally ask for another chance. Regards, - Gireesh.

In the afternoon after we did some shopping at the Solana we came here. We took the set lunch choice as we were hungry and before taking the cab we saw so many restaurants there a ourselves a shot and something new. The food was hardly anything. We were given in a some fixed plate-having holes like they give in students canteens in hongkong. Some chicken curry and some vegetable and the nan and rice and some sweet. There was no barbeque or tandoori chicken or samosas or anything interesting to eat.I love samosas and tandoori chicken but after the 100 khaui down I did not want to experiment. I could eat only the pieces of chicken from chicken curry and half portion of the bread .Even the rice was quite cold by the time we eat. The food also was tasteless. We were the only ones there and wondered if the restaurant gets any customers or we were the only ones got fooled. The waiters could not speak proper english too.I requested to talk to the owner and somebody came and he could not understand what I was talking and I could not understand what he was talking. We hurried got off and headed to a KFC to complete the balance meal.

Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants I have visited; and not just in Beijing. Food took me all the way back to Samrat Indian restaurant in NY, when I was in college. The buffet is an incredible deal, and the place feels warm. Stuffed myself on the Chicken and the vegetable cutlets (something) they had in the buffet. the Indian owner was was quite chill and laid back.

Dear SSM014, Thank you for the comments. The Sardar waiter has been sent back to India about 1 month ago. There have been replacements. The restaurant has been open for less than 2 years. We are getting some more staff to help service the customers better. I am always there, just running around most of the times. The service charge is there a part of the Chain and is there in other branches as well. But I am working on it with my partner. Thank you very much for the information you have provided and it is taken in the best way and we shall try our best to improve. Regards - Gireesh :)

Well I agree to some comments especially those made by youngzhang . The management needs to do something seriously about the sardar waiter..Total attitude..he often throws/ places dishes on the table as if he is doing a favour..The other guy who was a shade better (Mr. Prem) has been transferred to the Shenzhen branch..(I have been more happy with the Shenzhen branch food/ service...no complaints there...) I wonder what the service charge of 15 or 10 % is all about when service sucks..Food is good especially the aloo birbal (our favourite) I always notice that when we go to Punjabi as a small group or individually, service sucks..but whenever we go there to attend the Indian community (ICB Ladies etc) group events the service is good.. I hope u take this feedback in the right spirit Girish & Do seomthing about the service levels P.S I m not related to any other restaurants..except for the fact that I am Indian

Dear Spicyguy, Thank you for taking time out to send me this feedback. I DO really appreciate and quite LIKE it when someone tells me their honest views, and I try my best to a) Improve the restaurant on the whole and b) to try to make up in some way to the customer who has taken out time/ effort to write. The reason for my apology has been for going off the hook like that, its just that there have been some "Guerilla marketing" tactics by some competitors and the person who had said those discount comments to me the same day happened to be related to that certain restaurants. So I feel you have been wrongly dragged (by me) into this Indian vs Indian "battlezone". I wish you best of luck in deciding the place for your future residence and the best in life. Maybe we shall meet some other day (if outside my restaurant) and you must let me buy you a drink / coffee :) Best Regards and wishes - Gireesh.

Hi Gireesh, I surely dont feel nice that somebody apologise . Thanks for your kind words`"you didnt mean offend." Its a PERCEPTION TO REALITY issue which you should understand rather than argue. Having dined at best indian restaurants in California and NY, some of these are like the 5 star and 7 star level restaurants. The chefs ,managers, stewards at these restaurants give you an terrific experience which is why I love Indian food and I stick to visiting only the best restaurants . At these restaurants right from the word go ,the hosts, the food, the environment, the music, the service ,the people touch your heart ,make you feel really good . My perception of a good Indian restaurant in Beijing was against this background of best restaurants in California and NY. This is my first visit to Beijing , rather to Asia and I am trying to see if I can live here for a rather long period of time. And comparing your restaurant against the best restaurants in California and NY made me feel your restaurant is ordinary and that is my judgement. Many good reviews of your restaurant had created a PERCEPTION and the experience I found is ordinary.Thats a Reality.According to you and few other people they like your restaurant and feel great ..so you should be happy and I guess you feel on top of the world so its great that way.So be it. Customers like me make their own judgements and they wont even tell you . I had little time on hand and hence thought to share this. Since I am trying to settle down in either Beijing or Shanghai or HongKong to set up my office I have the luxury of time since my family is not with me so I wrote this review. I wont bother you more to reply to my post, guess I have rather spent a little too much time writing this posts and am wondering if it makes sense to bother restaurant owners like you who know what they are supposed to do! God bless you . I

Dear Spicyguy, But for you to imply that the above positive reviews about my restaurant are nothing more than - > "written by the restaurant owners friends? " > "There was some posts talking about the owner.I did not see any owner ?One indian waiter took the order and some chinese waiters serviced us." > "Just an ordinary indian restaurant to be avoided is my opinion after so many people have wrote its a great restaurant ! " > "May be Beijing reviewers are too generous !! " These comments don't seem to be really based on criticism towards food. But anyways, this is a hospitality industry and the customer is always right. So I concede, apologize and wish you the best for your Indian / International dining experience in Beijing, and feel sad that we could not live up to your standards, but promise to try to improve in the future. Really, I didnt mean to offend you. Best Regards - Gireesh.

Dear Spicyguy, Its just that after reading your comments, I went through a long list of tables billed, which ordered the certain items mentioned in your review, and there is just one, 2 weeks ago 15th evening, which coincides with a customer who said the above mentioned comments to me. And I also happen to know that that person works closely with another Indian restaurant in town. But as you explain there is a case of mistaken identify, then I must personally apologize and shall be more careful in receiving criticism, whether constructive or destructive. Regards - Gireesh.

Hi Gireesh, Good that somebody sees the feedback. Our key feedback was for the food ,thats it ! But you have not taken in right spirit as we never asked any discount of 10% or 15 %.Even for the service tax- we just paid off whatever the amount and noticed the service tax when we were driving back as we got the impression the service was not worth the service tax ! Thats it.! You have confused us with some other customers? Because we did not talk of any discounts-I wonder how you got the iimpression that we bully the staff of indian restaurants to get discounts..We`ve visited only 1 restaurant till now and we are too well mannered to bully anybody and I teach my children not to bully or get bullied ,but guess will not visit your indian restaurant hence forth ! as I have got hurt a bit. You cannot say -you are used to bullying.??? for small monies like 5 dollars. Bullying is not a good word and not a good manner...and you need to be humble to incorporate feedback not get into argument with customers. God bless you anyway that he makes you more wise and more humble in future.

Dear Spicyguy, Hello, this is Gireesh, owner of Punjabi. I have seen your comments, and also seen what you have written about the other places. Regarding the comments, I would like to mention that the "Indian waiter" who took your order was me - the owner - I am Indian. I usually dress in traditional clothes, since it goes well with the restaurant, plus. I AM Indian. Regarding the Tandoori Chicken, you had asked for it to be extra well done, and thats why it was cooked more than the normal time. I am not sure about fortune I am making by saving pieces of Lamb from the curry - but its the normal serving as always. The dish is Lamb Vindaloo (which is Lamb with Potatoes) if you would have liked a dish with only or more lamb, you could have asked the Indian "waiter" and I am sure I would have gladly added mutton pieces OR changed your dish free of cost. Regarding the 10% service charge, yes- restaurant does have a 10% service charge, and it mentioned on every page of menu, and its not something we added in the end. Also, if some customers are not happy, then we CAN delete the service charge as well. But in your case it wasnt deleted, since you insisted that I not charge you, because the words used were - "None of the other Indian restaurants dare to charge me the service charge, plus they all give me discount 10-15%.. So you have to give me also." We dont HAVE to anything. If you would have just asked me, I would have gladly removed it, but please don't tell us what we should to, because you are used to bullying the staff of the other Indian restaurants. But I shall take note of the critical comments you have given, and shall thank you for the feedback, and think of ways of incorporating it, so we can improve your dining experience the next time. Regards, Gireesh,.

After Taj ,at Guomao we tried this place. This is quite ordinary restaurant with ordinary decor . There were so many reviews about this place so we decided to go here. Tandoori Chicken-was not juicy and was burnt. My favourite lamb vindaloo had too many potatoes ,guess to save portions of lamb. Some cheap restaurants do this in California too, where I developed the taste for Indian food. The jeera rice was so oily .So also the Garlic Nan-it was too oily. I wonder the reviews written -I guess more written by the restaurant owners friends? Nothing great about this restaurant. There was some posts talking about the owner.I did not see any owner ?One indian waiter took the order and some chinese waiters serviced us. They made us pay 10 % tax ?for what for ordinary service? Just an ordinary indian restaurant to be avoided is my opinion after so many people have wrote its a great restaurant ! May be Beijing reviewers are too generous !!

Dear ChrisBert, Hello. This is Gireesh, the owner of Punjabi. Thank you for coming and trying out the 88 RMB buffet. . I am glad to know that you thought the dishes were tasty but apologize if they were lukewarm. I was around all the time, and paid extra attention to your table. Should have just let me know that you thought that its not warm enough, and I would have sent it to the kitchen and got that done red-hot before you could finish 1/2 a Nan :) Also would like to thank you for what you say for the service and choice of decor. Regarding the choice in the buffet, we always have the 2 non-veg curries, 2 non-veg snacks, 1 veg soup, 1 veg snack, 2 veg curries, 1 lentils, 2 rice, 1 dessert, salads, sauces and Yoghurt (Raita) along with the Nan/Roti and the unlimited drinks. Of course, there is more emphasis on vegetarian dishes, but for future, you can also mix-n-match buffet and ala-carte :) You can have the 88 buffet, and order any other dishes from the menu as well :) Please let me know the next time you are there. and Thank you again for writing about this and letting us know. - Gireesh :)

Tried the RMB 88 dinner buffet. The dishes tasted good, but all of them were only lukewarm and the choice is somewhat limited. Service was nice. Interior is nice, clean and unpretentious, Bollywood style only on the screen. For people with a big appetite and thirst or newbies to Indian cuisine the buffet is a good choice, otherwise ordering a la caret should be in consideration.

I am a regular with Punjabi restaurant for almost 4 years now... In Shanghai, Beijing, everywhere... they have 7 restaurants and all are good; with Beijing being the best! This is one of the best restaurants I've been to in Beijing, and definitely the best Indian food in the city. love this place! everything is just perfect. The decor is beautiful. The service is very good. i went there several times. The first time only me & my wife been there, there was a big dinner party was arranged for like the indian community .85% of the people in that restaurant that time was indian so we felt we werent in beijing. but in India having indian food. Even though the Indian group who ordered the food around the same time we did , we still didnt have to wait too long for our food. One more thing i noticed was the young Indian owner who is always there meeting the customers with a smile. I am so happy to have discovered this place considering the quality of the food, the decor and the very attentive and friendly service. if anyone who asks me where to go for indian food, Punjabi will always been the first one i recommend.
