“BENG BENG, The Depth of Ease”, is an exhibition underlining a plight many of us see before us in urban China- an inevitable erosion of cultural identity. The artist Laurens Tan has used his working context in Beijing to ponder on China as ‘the New World’ from the standpoint of an artist who has his roots here but considers himself a global dweller.
In this project the SanLunChe (三轮车) becomes a platform for reflection and commentary on China’s rapid urban trajectory, the new consumerism, its contemporary art and on the question of the mutability of its culture and customs.
Laurens Tan takes inspiration from Chinese symbology and identity, art and design to hyper-real heights. From the capricious to the intimidating, his inventive art deciphers meaning in language.
His spirit of speculation is borne out of the relationship between the calculable (scientific/ mathematical/ digital) and non-calculable (mystical), and forms the basis for his themes and motifs. This multi-faceted exhibition is typical of his projects- equally at home in design and as art.
