Pianist/composer Xia Jia has been striking out in a few directions compositionally: fully-composed trio music written in the jazz idiom; digging up pieces by master composers too difficult to be played casually; and fine tuning the group improv of his trio with Charlie Wang on bass and Xiao Dou on trap set. Xia Jia's music is fresh, high energy, and thought provoking in the "Third Stream" vein, a confluence of western classical theory and the jazz vocabulary. If not already, he is a major figure in the shape of jazz in China to come.
