Description

Hailing from San Antonio, Texas (USA), pianist/composer Brake just landed in the capital after celebrating over 15 years of music-making with his band Jazz Protagonists. The music is off-beat and harkens to Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, and a lot that 60s West Coast sound.

Great show last night. OT is a really nice bar with a great atmosphere. It's small enough to feel intimate. Decent drinks too. The bands at other jazz places in Beijing tend to do the same old standards out of that same old book they all have. OT breaks out of that by using bands that play more challenging, unusual music. Last night for incstance, the trio started out with Copacabana, and did Sweet dreams (by the Eurythmics). I couldn't believe it but each time it was totall remade into a jazz tune, so much that some people didn't even recognize what was being done. A transformation of the material that is exactly what the jazz greats like Miles Davis did. It makes you really listen to the music. They did a spaced-out version of Careless Whisper, which the pianist did a superb Bill Evans imitation, forming the song into something really beautiful and intense. All three musicians were fantastically good at what they do, and you could see them communicating and developing ideas as they went along. Really entertaining music, guys! Hopefully better weather next time..

Hahaaa, thanks!! Glad you all liked the show. And everyone deserves a medal of some sort for coming out that rainy night. The club was a blast to play in, as I knew it would be. OT audiences have been great every time I've been there. See you on the 25th..... and make Leon smile: MAKE RESERVATONS!

Whayt they played a Kenny G song too? No way! I didn't recognize it, they must have really transformed it into an art piece. Or did they play it at the end.

Heh, nope, didn't actually play any Kenny G. Wow. Must say, though, he's a fine pop melodist. Not jazz... pop. But you could do some swinging versions of some of his tunes. "Songbird" might not be all that fertile for raw material, though. You're perfectly right in saying that the greats all reinterpreted the pop music of their day, sometimes counterintuitively.

However, this next time around, we'll be concentrating on original compositions.

Hope you're coming on the 25th!! And bring some friends.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to see if I can check out Moreno Donadel there tonight. Should be great.
