Description

The first international Chinese Biennial, the inaugural exhibition of Chinese character spatial art derived from hanzi, traditional Chinese writing, opens in Bejing on Saturday 2 August 2008 through 6 September.

Gathering works by 51 international artists for this exhibition of spatialized hanzi alongside dimensional works inspired by it, the exhibition underscores the spatial structure of Chinese characters, an underecognized form of sculptural practice, with a category newly termed “hanzi spatialized Chinese character art.”

With this exhibition, the three thousand year history of hanzi is liberated into space. The Chinese Biennial showcases dimensional Chinese character art in installations, spoken word, video, performances, music, architecture, new media design, and fashion.

The invited artists are from America, Australia, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Holland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China.
