Ben Houge Live at D-22!
An evening of ambient electronic music and sound, performed by Shanghai resident Ben Houge on laptop. All works are generated in real-time using Max/MSP; some are fully automatic, and some incorporate voices, bells, and radios recorded as part of the performance.
American sound artist and composer Ben Houge has been living in Shanghai since 2004, but it's taken him over 4 years to make his Beijing performance debut. Ben draws extensively on his twelve years of experience designing audio for videogames at Sierra, Microsoft, and Ubisoft to create dynamic, responsive, real-time artworks, confronting the challenges of real-time multimedia head on (and vehemently eschewing loops). The most well known games to which Ben has contributed audio include Leisure Suit Larry 7 (1996), King's Quest: Mask of Eternity (1998), Half-Life: Opposing Force (1999), and Arcanum (2001); he recently finished a 3.5 year stint as audio director of Tom Clancy's EndWar (2008), developed in Shanghai by Ubisoft.
In addition to his work in games, Ben has been active in new music circles, performing at the Shanghai eArts Festival, the 2Pi Festival in Hangzhou, the Zendai Museum in Shanghai, and several NOIShanghai events (organized by Torturing Nurse). Prior to moving to Shanghai, he was active in the Seattle new music community, founding the Sound Currents concert series and contributing to the Seattle School composers' collective from its inception.
