Tiananmen, Manchu Portraits and Beijing Opera Photo Exhibition of Old Beijing
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Chopsticks Café & Bar are proud to present a photo exhibition of old Beijing. The photos have been collected by the two Danish owners of Beijing Postcards during the past 10 years. The photos are from the period of 1890 to 1960s. Most of the photos come from private collections abroad, while a few have been bought here in China on flea and antique markets. They come from the people who lived, worked and travelled in China during those years and who took photos of everyday life, street scenes, and the average "laobaixing" people, as well as famous buildings, cities, palaces, temples, art forms and much more. The photo exhibition is jointly arranged by Chopsticks Café & Bar and Beijing Postcards.
For the exhibition at Chopsticks running from 18 September to 11 October 2009, we have chosen three Beijing themes 1. Tiananmen – from imperial gate to the visual symbol of new China. The Tiananmen Gate as well as the buildings and area around it have not always looked the way they do today. The viewer will be a witness to this development during our photos which date from around 1900 to the 1960s. 2. The times they are a-changing - The Manchu’s in Beijing around 1900-1925. As ruling elite for 250 years during the Qing Dynasty, the Manchu’s of course had many privileges. During the late 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century however, things became much more muddled. The Manchu women borrowed heavily from Chinese women's fashion and vice versa. 3. Frozen in time - Beijing opera in the 1930s. (Photos have been taken by unknown professional photographer). The 250 year old Beijing Opera is world famous, and is still today a very important part of the cultural scene of Beijing.
On opening night (18 September), the two owners of Beijing Postcards, Lars Ulrik Thom and Simon Rom Gjeroe will give a small introduction to the photos and the themes of the exhibition from 7.30 pm
