EXTENDED UNTIL DEC.19th: the theatre of the Italian Institute of Culture will host the first indoor exhibit with eight Urban Carpets by Italian artists Marcella Campa and Stefano Avesani on display. Urban Carpet is an art project created to record as well as draw people’s attention onto traditionalpatterns of neighbourhoods, courtyards and lanes in Beijing, all of which are threatened by construction development. This work explores both spatial and social aspects of the traditional Hutong urban tissue and the community of people living in it. Urban Carpet project consists in 8 carpets embroidered by hand and several temporary public events (spontaneous happenings on the lanes and one-day only exhibitions on siheyuan courtyards) taking place in the Hutong alleys and courtyards between September and November 2009. Each carpet represents the map of a Hutong area with a size of approximately one square kilometer and a total population of about 30.000 people. These areas have been isolated and presented as autonomous towns within the much larger city. The maps have been reinterpreted as spatial textures and have been embroidered by hand with the same technique once applied in the propaganda tapestries of the seventies.
