The pink fluorescent lights are what one first remarks on one’s first night out in China… In sunlight, the neon pink marks what is the appearance of traditional barbershops. At night, their pinkish glow transforms the bare insides of a Chinese shop into a boutique that promises to satisfy every visitor’s dreams, in all its murky, sticky appeal, oozing with sounds and breaths one dares not mention in the morning light. I wanted to introduce these KTV, sauna, gogo bars, hairdressers, hotels, homes, streets and especially the bar hostesses in their originality. From Beijing to Fujian, through Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Shanghai, this exhibition seeks to capture a small hidden part of China, without seeking to guilt or blame the visitors and onlookers. Everyone is free here to think and imagine what they desire. This marks the continuation of a traveler’s journey. The grain is big; the images are often blurred. Each artwork is 1X1 meter big, within which the pictures are split into trilogies, each part symbolizing the loss of landmarks and the alcoholic blur of the night. While Western societies have banned and suppressed the act of love outside marriage, in Asia, the body and emotions enjoy this censored reality. Some photos will not be exhibited because the work of censorship has been endured, leaving my job slightly amputated. Yet in the rest of the pictures, the spirit remains. Welcome my friends…my nights are more beautiful than your days.
